HART communication

protocol
WHAT IS HART?
• HART ("Highway Addressable Remote Transducer") is a
communication protocol designed for industrial process
measurement and control applications.
• It's called a hybrid protocol because it combines analog and
digital communication. It can communicate a single variable
using a 4-20 mA analog signal, while also communicating
added information on a digital signal.
• The digital information is carried by a low-level modulation
superimposed on the standard 4-to-20 mA current loop.
• The digital signal does not affect the analog reading because
it's removed from the analog signal by standard filtering
techniques.
• The ability to carry this added digital information is the
basis for HART's key benefits.
Why HART
• There are several reasons to have a host communicate with
a field instrument. These includes:
1. Device Diagnostics
2. Device troubleshooting
3. Reading the values of additional measurements
provided by the device
4. Device health and status
5. Point to point

HART Communication Layers
HART Data
• Digital data: 35-40 valuable data items standard in every HART
device
• Device identification: Device tag, suppliers, device type and
revision, device serial number
• Calibration data: Upper and lower range values, Upper and lower
sensor limit, PV damping, last calibration date.
• Process Variables: Primary variable plus secondary
measurements and multivariable parameter.
• Status/Diagnostic alerts: Device malfunction, configuration
change, power fail restart, loop current fixed or saturated, primary and
secondary variable out of limits, communication error
