Objectives

 Introduce students to basic concepts of

community dentistry

 Terminologies
Dentistry

 The branch of medicine dealing with the

anatomy, development and diseases of the
teeth.
Community
 A group of people living in a particular area.
Community Dentistry
 A branch or specialty of dentistry that deals
with the community and its aggregate dental or
oral health rather than that of the individual
patient.
Health
 A state of complete physical, mental and
social well-being and not merely the absence
of disease or infirmity (WHO)
Oral Health
 A standard of health of the oral and related
tissues without active disease. This state
should enable the individual to eat, speak and
socialize without discomfort or
embarrassment, and contribute to general well-
being (dept of health, LONDON)
Dental Public Health
 The science and art of preventing oral
diseases, promoting oral health and improving
the quality of life through the organized efforts
of society.
Disease
 “A condition in which body or health
is impaired, a departure from a state
of health, and alteration of the
human body interrupting the
performance of vital functions.”
ILLness
 It refers not only to the presence of a
specific disease
but also to the
individuals perception
and behaviour in
response to the disease,
aswell as the impact
of the disease on the
psychosocial environment.

Concept Of Health

 Part 2
Concepts Of Health

 Biomedical Concept

 Ecological Concept

 Psychosocial Concept

 Holistic Concept
Biomedical Concept

 Health is the absence of disease.

Ecological Concept

 Dynamic equilibrium between

individual, environment and disease.

 Availability of food .
Psychosocial Concept
 Social, psychological, cultural,
economic & political factors need to
be considered while defining &
measuring health.
Holistic Concept

 This concept resembles to the

ancient view that health implies a
sound mind, in a sound body, in a
sound family in a sound environment
Concepts of Disease

 Germ Theory.

 Epidemiological Triad.

 Multifactorial Causation.

 Web of Causation.
Germ Theory of Disease

 One-to-one relationship between

causal agent and disease.
Epidemiological Triad

 There are some factors related to the

host and environment are important
to determine whether or not disease
will occur in host.
Epidemiological Triad

Epidemiological Triad
Multifactorial Causation:
 This concept offers multiple
approaches for prevention and
control of disease. Diseases like
Coronary heart disease and cancer
are of multi factorial nature
Web of Causation:
 This is ideally suited for chronic
disease, where outcome is because
of interactions of multiple factors,
but disease agent is often unknown.
This concept considers all
predisposing factors & their
interrelations with each other.
Concepts of Control

 Disease control

 Disease elimination

 Disease eradication
Disease Control

REDUCING

 The incidence of disease

 Duration of disease
 Risk of transmission
 Effects of infection
Disease Elimination

 To eliminate the transmission of

disease

 E.g:polio,measeles,diptheria
Disease Eradication

 Eradicate the disease

 E.g: small pox
