Arithmetic Sequence

If the difference between consecutive

terms are the same.
Example
4, 9, 14, 19, 24
9-4= 5
14-9=5
19-14=5
24-9=5
Common Difference

D= a2 - a1
FORMULA:
an = a1 + (n-1)d
Where:
a1 = the first term
an = the nth term (example: a13, a25 )
N = the number of the term from a1 to an
Sample Problem
Find the 5th and 11th term of the arithmetic
sequence given the first term and common
difference.
a1 = 3 d= 4
an= a1+(n-1)d
a5 = 3+(5-1) 4 = 3+16=19
a11=3+(11-1)4 = 3+40=43
Practice!
Give the common difference and find the
indicated term in each arithmetic sequence
1. 1,5,9,13
Find a10
2.9,6,3
Find a8
3. 2,11,20
Find a7
Practice!
Find the first 5 terms of the sequence if the first
term is 15 and the common difference is 4.
Arithmetic Mean
The terms between a1 and an
of an arithmetic sequence are
called arithmetic means.
Example
Find the arithmetic mean between 5 and 19
A2 = a1 + a3 /2
= 5 + 19 / 2
= 24/2
= 12
Therefore,
5, 12, 19
Example
Insert 4 arithmetic means between 5 and 25
an = a1 + (n-1)d
25= 5 + (6-1) d
25-5 = 5d
20=5d
D=4
A2 = 5 + 4 = 9
A3 = 9 + 4 = 13
A4 = 13 + 4= 17
A5 = 17 + 4= 21
A6 = 25
Therefore 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25
Arithmetic Sum

The sum of all

terms
Formula
Sn = n [a1 + (a1 + (n-1) d
2
Or

Sn= n/2 [2a1 + (n-1)d]

Or

Sn= (a1 + a2) n

2
Example
1 + 2 + 3 + … +148 + 149 + 150
