WHAT IS CONCEPT?

• The word concept has a broad

range of meaning depending on
its usage. Its core meaning is
abstract.
WHAT IS CONCEPT PAPER?
• A Concept Paper also known as prospectus,
preliminary proposal or pre-proposal, is a document
written to convince potential funders to sponsor a
product, program or services. It contains detailed
information about the very concept, its objectives, how
long a project may take, how much money it may cost
and how its completion may benefit all parties.
• Concept papers typically range from 1 to 2 double-
spaced pages (250 to 500 words), not counting
bibliographies.
USES OF CONCEPT PAPER
• To interest potential funders
• To develop potential solutions or
investigations into project ideas
• To determine whether a project is fundable
• To serve as the foundation of a full
proposal
FIVE COMPONENTS OF AN EFFECTIVE CONCEPT
PAPER
1. Introduction- this part highlights the applicant’s mission and vision
and how it aligns with the funder’s or the sponsor’s.
2. Purpose or Rationale- like Review of Related Literature in research,
the rationale of the concept paper provides written studies about the
topic, gap in knowledge to be filled, and problems to be addressed in
the realization of the project.
3. Project Description- this section includes goals, objectives and
overview of methodology of the project which should be based on
empirical evidence, reasonable cost and complexity and time
boundedness. This part stresses out plan to do, approach to be
utilized and benefits and potential impacts to achieve.
4. Support or Budget- although in some cases this section
is left out, this provides an outline if either the main
budget categories for the support of the proposed project
or the bottom line amount which has the explanation on
how the budget will be spent or allocated
5. Contact information- this section provides the contact
information of the applicant of his organization’s
authorized personnel to make funding request should the
funder or sponsor agree with the proposed project.
PROCESS ON HOW TO WRITE A CONCEPT
PAPER

1. Grab your reader’s attention- This

means it’s critical to “hook” them right
at the beginning. Giving your concept
paper a descriptive title, is a good way to
grab their attention.
2. Explain why you are
approaching this sponsor- you have
to show your reader or prospective
sponsor how serious you are on
approaching and seeking for their
support.
3. Describe the problem your
project addresses. Describe the
problem you want to solve, and
illustrate how you know it exists.
4. Put the problem in context to
explain why it matters- Show how your
project relates to current issues,
questions, or problems. Statistics and
other numerical data can help build a
convincing case for why your problem
matters.
