 Been around since 1887, coca cola gave away free drinks
 Post started using coupons in 1909 to help sell breakfast
products
 Today more than 2800 packaged good companies offer
coupons on their products
 In 2010 coupons generated 3.5 BILLION in transactions
in the USA alone

 1888 - Asa Candler used paper tickets for free glasses of Coke to help market his
new soda
 1909 - C.W. Post used 1 cent coupons to start marketing Grape Nuts breakfast
 1930 - Coupon usage grows dramatically during the great depression
 1940 - Big chain grocery stores begin to use coupons to attract consumers away
from purchasing at local markets
 1957 - Nielsen Coupon Clearing House was created to be devoted entirely to coupon
redemption
 1965 - Half of all the families in the United States begin cutting coupons
 1990 - The invention of the internet leads to the downloaded printable coupon and
online coupons
 1992 - The last year coupon usage is on the rise for the next 17 years
 2002 - Americans saved $3.8 billion shopping with coupons
 2009 - The U.S. government uses coupons to promote converter box sales for the
digital television transition

 Redemption of online coupons are up 360% from
last year- 1st coupon useage increase in 17 years
 Inmar estimates CONSUMERS REDEEMED 3.3 billion
consumer packaged goods coupons in 2009, with brands
issueing 367 BILLION coupons. Average face value $1.44
 April 2010 35 MILLION consumers visited coupon sites. 57%
of consumers said they wouldn”t have purchased without the
discount offered

Getting Organized

Binder- use a 3 ring binder with


baseball type holders inside
Date circulars and clip as needed
Legal size envelopes with store names
on them

 Go during off peak hours
 I always warn folks that they may want to pick another
line!
 Go to store with your list in hand and your
coupons clipped and ready to go
Take your stores coupon policy with you, always ask to talk to
the Manager if you have any problems

 Sale cycles are every 3-4 months

· 2 ricola cough drops 2.29 - 1x $1/2 man q. + .99 instore q = .
49 each
· 1 cream of wheat 1.00 - 1x $1 man q = free
· 2 nestle coffee creamer (my receipt says 2.99 and it doesn't
look like 1 was taken off at the end but my OOP was still very
good so I'm cool with it) - 1x $1/2 man q
· 2 Pediacare infant drops 5.99 - $1 man q + $5 instore q =
free

· 1 Dawn dish detergent 1.99 - $1 man q + .99 instore q =
free
· 2 Morton salt .99 - $1/2 instore q = .98 each
and used 1 $4 RR for Profusion (which even though it was a
P&G RR it still spit the $3 for $10 for 2 tides and Febreze
out, to the surprise of me and the cashier.)
total saved in man q's = 17.00
total saved in store savings and q's = 16.39
total savings of 33.39
spent 7.77 with 1.36 of that being tax and only did one
transaction, and got a $3 RR back.
