Implementing
VLAN
What is a VLAN?
- VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network)
- The VLAN organizes physically separated
users into the same logical group.
- The concept is that one LAN but divided
virtually.
VLANs allow logically defined user groups
rather than user groups defined by their physical
locations. For example, you can arrange user
groups such as engineering, sales, HR; rather
than everyone on the first floor, everyone in the
second floor, and so on.
• VLANs are identified by a number from 1 to
1005 (normal-range) and an extension from
1006-4094.

• VLAN IDs 1 and 1002 to 1005 are

reserved.

• Useable VLAN IDs are 2-1001 and 1006-

4094.

• The switch supports up to 255 VLANs.

VLAN provides the following:
 Broadcast Control
 Improved Manageability
 Improved Performance
 Improved Security
 Flexibility
 Scalability
 Improved Segmentation
VLAN Port Membership Modes

A port must be configured to a VLAN by assigning a

membership mode that specifies the kind of traffic the
port carries:
 Access – the port/interface belongs to only one VLAN. Use
only for switch to PC connections.
 Trunk – the port/interface is a member of all VLANs.
 Dynamic access – A dynamic access port can belong to one
normal-range VLAN (VLAN ID 1 to 1005) and is dynamically
assigned by a VLAN Membership Policy Server (VMPS). The
VMPS is applicable for Catalyst 5000 or Catalyst 6000 series
switch.
