Living on the Edge

(new normal after

pandemic)
Prepared by bnioT and Ecosystem Partners
(Edge in Bahasa means Hilirisasi)

lockdown@thamrin.jakarta.id
The Internet of Things (ioT) is not new, neither is the rapid rise of
connected devices or customers’ demands of instantaneous
service. These are realities of Digitalization. With the New
Normal now it is the final destination on the journey of Digital
Transformation.

The next round of changes is brewing. These changes will

require service providers turn their focus to the periphery of
their networks and get closer to their customers.
This next frontier for providers is to conquer THE EDGE.
Gartner predicts starting 2022, 75% of
enterprise-generated data will be created and
processed (in the Edge) outside the traditional
centralized data center or cloud, which is an
increase from today’s less than 10%.
The factors are driving to the Edge:
1. a new normal (Remote Services, everything goes Virtual,
Stay Home but stay connected),
2. the need for low latency (Latency, ioT, and 5G are
irrevocably interconnected),
3. revenue and cost concerns,
4. competitiveness (Edge computing allows data
produced by
ioT devices to be processed closer to where it is created).

Spectrum is only a part of broadband infrastructure. Developing broadband infrastructure is still a partial process.
Indonesia is currently accelerating the process towards becoming a developed country by empowering the ICT
sectors comprehensively including human capital development to become digital talent, inclusion of small
medium enterprises into the digital economy, and modernizing or stipulating regulations to protect Indonesia
national interests.

RINGKASAN EKSEKUTIF
TREN 2021
1
Pasar potensial di luar Jawa
Ada lebih dari 70 juta penduduk
Indonesia yang belum bisa mengakses
internet. Sebagian dari mereka berada
di luar Pulau Jawa yang sebagian
masih menggunakan jaringan 2G
hingga ketiadaan jaringan. Ini menjadi
pasar potensial untuk digarap lebih
serius di tahun 2021, meski diperlukan
skema yang pas karena wilayah ini
mungkin saja memenuhi kriteria
wilayah USO (Universal Service Obligation)
2
Belanja online untuk pemenuhan
kebutuhan sehari-hari
Peningkatan aktivitas online selama
pandemi diprediksi bakal terus
berlanjut di tahun 2021. Aktivitas
belanja online yang sebelum pandemi
didominasi kebutuhan sekunder,
saat ini bergeser ke kebutuhan
primer; bukan hanya untuk
memenuhi kebutuhan sehari-hari
semata, tetapi juga untuk
kesenangan (leisure).

3
UMKM Go Online
Membuka lapak di e-commerce menjadi
salah satu kunci bagi UMKM mengatasi
pandemi. Pada tahun 2021, diprediksi
akan semakin banyak pelaku usaha
yang memanfaatkan channel ini
mengingat saat ini baru 2 juta UMKM
yang memanfaatkannya dari total 55
juta UMKM di Indonesia.
4
IoT makin
digunakan
Perangkat Internet of Things (IoT) kian
banyak dimanfaatkan di masa pandemi.
Tren cerah bagi teknologi perangkat
berbasis IOT diperkirakan hingga 2022
CAGR sebesar 159% per tahun dengan
nilai penggunaannya hingga Rp. 355T
5
Infrastruktur jadi
tantangan
Tidak akan ada broadband internet tanpa
ketersediaan infrastruktur yang memadai.
Sepanjang 2020, banyak investasi yang berhenti
akibat pandemi. Tahun 2021 menjadi momen
krusial untuk kembali mengejar target penggelaran
fixed broadband* di Indonesia dengan target 15-17%
dari total jumlah rumah tangga di Indonesia
(*termasuk fixed wireless access )
6
Industri data center
cerah, cloud lokal
mendung
Aktivitas digital membuat kebutuhan
data center di Indonesia berkembang
pesat dan diperkirakan tahun 2021 akan
tumbuh 120%. Kendati demikian, industri
komputasi awan lokal (cloud computing)
justru menghadapi persaingan ketat dari
para pemain asing sehingga patut
dikembangkan kolaborasi global yang

Dukungan pemerintah lewat UU Cipta Kerja
Undang-Undang Cipta Kerja menjadi sinyal penting
dari pemerintah untuk mendorong dan melindungi
industri telekomunikasi. Mulai dari infrastructure

dan daerah dalam mendukung, mendorong
penggelaran jaringan telekomunikasi serta Analog
