Question 2
Identify and
01 defining the
problem
Identify the problems
In this problem,you have just completed a degree in
marketing and received offers to become a marketing
executive by two companies. Company A is in your
hometown and offers a lower starting salary and a
lower annual salary increment than company B that is
in a big city. We need to determine which is a better
choice.
Define the problems
Factors:
1. Does the salary exceed the expenses?
2. Location
3. Career progression
(Are we going to be more advanced?)
4. Determine the distance between the
work place and living place
Making
assumptions 02
❖ The average salary for a marketing executive is RM 2000-RM3000.
(RM2000 at company A ; RM3000 at company B)
❖ Driving car to the workplace.
❖ The petrol price is RM2.05 per litre.
❖ The car is Myvi. (petrol consumption rate=9.38 km per litre)
❖ Expenses in the big city: no house rent, more expensive food (RM
500/month)
❖ Expenses in the hometown: no house rent, cheaper food (RM300/month)
❖ Assume that the work hours and days are the same
❖ Pocket money of RM200 is given to the parents or relatives as an
appreciation for them to let us stay at home
❖ Assume that the big city is in Selangor while the hometown is in Perlis
❖ Assume the distance from home to company A is 10km while
distance from home to company B is 22km.
Identifying the
Variables 03
3. Identifying the variables
Distance
d1 = distance from home to company A
d2 = distance from home to company B
D = difference between d1 and d2
10 km 22 km
Salary
s1 = salary of company A RM 2000 RM 3000
s2 = salary of company B
Petrol
H = the current petrol price in RM per litre
m = petrol consumption rate of car
P1 = petrol consumption rate of car in km per litre to company A
P2 = petrol consumption rate of car in km per litre to company B
P = difference in the amount of petrol needed
3. Identifying the variables
Pocket Money
x = pocket money for parents (Works at company A)
y = pocket money for parents (Works at company B)
RM 200 RM 200
Food Expenses
a = food expenses (Works at company A) RM 300 RM 500
b = food expenses (Works at company B)
S =Salary
difference in salary for company
Petrol
T = different in costs
A of petrol
compared to company B (balance)
04 Applying Mathematics to
Solve Problems
4. Applying mathematics to solve problems
Salary of the Pocket money &
Distance Petrol
companies Food Expenses
S1 = RM2000 d1 = 10 km H = RM2.05/ℓ x = RM200
S2 = RM3000 d2 = 22 km m = 9.38 km/ℓ y = RM200
Balance company A a = RM300
= S1 - x - a b = RM500
= 2000 - 200 - 300 S = Balance company B - Balance company A
= RM1500 = RM2300 - RM1500
= RM800
Balance company B
= S2 - y - b
= 3000 - 200 - 500
= RM2300
4. Applying mathematics to solve problems
Salary of the Pocket money&
Distance Petrol

S1 = RM2000 d1 = 10 km H = RM2.05/ℓ x = RM200
S2 = RM3000 d2 = 22 km m = 9.38 km/ℓ y = RM200
S = RM800 a = RM300
b = RM500
D = d2 - d1 P=D/m
= 22km - 10km = 12 / 9.38
= 12km = 1.279 ℓ
