THE BRAIN
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Neocortex Brain
 Neocortex – also called as the rational brain.
This is responsible for the intellectual tasks
such as language, planning, abstraction, and

perception.
 Limbic system – Also called as the
intermediate brain. This is responsible for
the motivation and the emotion involved in
feeding, reproductive being and parental
behavior.
 Primitive brain – Also called as the
reptilian complex. This controls the self-
preservation and aggressive behavior of
humans similar to the survival instincts of
animals.
Dr. Paul Maclean’s
“The Triune Brain
Theory”
 The brain is composed of three main structures: the
cerebrum, cerebellum, and the brain stem
 The cerebrum is the largest portion of the brain
responsible for our thoughts and is divided in to four
regions.
 The cerebellum is in the middle and is responsible for
muscle movements.
 The brain stem connects the brain to the spinal cord.

THE BRAIN
 Different functions of the cerebrum are found in
different regions
 Frontal Lobe – in charge of our thoughts,
 Temporal Lobe – in charge of our balance, and hearing.
 language, memory, learning, and perception.
 Occipital Lobe – responsible for our vision.
 Parietal Lobe – in charge for bodily sensation.

THE BRAIN
DOMINANCE
THEORY &
THE WHOLE
BRAIN
THEORY
 The Brain Dominance Theory
 States that our behavior is a function of the heightened activity
of either right or left brain hemisphere.
 The brain is a bilateral structure: the left hemisphere and the
right hemisphere
 The left hemisphere is important in language functions and
analytical thinking
 The right hemisphere is geared towards holistic thinking,
creativity and visuals

THE BRAIN
RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAIN

Recognizing faces
Expressing emotions
Creating music
Reading emotions
Appreciating color
Using imagination
Being intuitive
Being creative
LEFT SIDE OF THE BRAIN

Language
Logic
Critical thinking
Numbers
Reasoning
 The Brain Dominance Theory
 Left brain students may prefer outlines, didactic environments,
straight lecture, and long reading assignments.
 Right brain students prefer the use of stories, and experiential
learning.
 The Left-brain hemisphere are dominant tend to be logical,
detailed and methodical, while whose right hemisphere
dominant manifest spatial ability, artistic and talent

THE BRAIN
 The Whole Brain Theory
 Believes that the brain is divided in to four
quadrants where each quadrant is responsible
for particular abilities.
