1. A career may be defined as ‘a sequence of
jobs/job placements that constitute what a
person does for a living’.

2. Career planning is the process of
enhancing an employee’s future value.
3. A career plan is an individual’s choice of
occupation, organization and career
path.

Osborn, ‘Career planning is a process of
systematically matching career goals and
individual capabilities with opportunities
for their fulfillment’.
Why do we need an effective Career
Planning?
 Career planning encourages individuals to
explore and gather information, which
enables them to synthesize, gain
competencies, make decisions, set goals
and take action.
 It is a crucial phase of human resource
development that helps the employees in
making strategy for work-life balance.
 In the HRM science career is defined as
the sequence of the person’s work-related
experiences in one or several organizations
(Baruch, 2004; Greenhaus and Callanan, 2006).
 Thus, according to the contemporary
sense, career comprises not just vertical
promotion to higher posts, but also any
change of posts, responsibilities and the
related learning seeking to acquire various
meaningful work experiences.

 Planning your career always keeps you in the
direction in which you want your career to head.
But sometimes it might so happen that after all
the research and analysis, you might still be
confused on taking the next step.
 In such a scenario you may consider the
SMARTER system for planning your career

1. Specific: Avoid ambiguity by being as specific as
you can.
2. Measurable: Visualize and gage all that you have
already achieved.
3. Achievement: Motivate yourself by setting smaller
targets that can be easily achieved.
4. Realistic: Being realistic and reasonable is crucial.
5. Time Management: Set time frames for
completing specific activities.
6. Empowerment: Empower your goals to bring
about the changes you want.

There are Five Reasons to be Flexible about Your
Career Plans
You may feel pressured to plan out your
whole life at the beginning of your career.
Some people may have well-focused career
goals early in life, but most of all don’t
have; however they still find their way to the
right job. It does not mean the end for both
of the groups.

1. People change
While a certain career may seem like a
good fit for you now, think about how
different you may be in five, ten or
twenty years. As you get older, have
more experiences and learn new things,
your feelings about what you want to do
may change. Many jobs will suit you and
allow you to use your talents.
