Week 1 Lesson
INTRODUCTION
Tourism is a complex industry that involves a broad range of businesses,
organizations and government agencies. Each party in the chain contributes to
the overall holiday experience of the customer to ensure value in each chain. To
create and run a successful tourism business requires you to have industry-
specific knowledge and information. Although many of us have been “tourist” at
some point in our lives, defining what tourism actually is can be difficult. Tourism
is the activities of people travelling to and staying in places outside their usual
environment for leisure, business or other purposes for not more than one
consecutive year. Tourism is a dynamic and competitive industry that requires
the ability to adapt constantly to customers’ changing needs and desires, as the
customer’s satisfaction, safety and enjoyment are particularly the focus of
tourism businesses.

WHAT IS TOURISM?
Tourism is the act and process of spending time away from home in
pursuit of recreation, relaxation, and pleasure, while making use of
the commercial provision of services. As such, tourism is a product
of modern social arrangements, beginning in Western
Europe in the 17th century, although it has antecedents in classical
antiquity. According to Goeldner and Ritchie: Tourism is the
processes, activities, outcomes arising from relationships and
interaction among tourists, tourism suppliers, and surrounding
environment that are involve in attracting and hosting of visitors.

HOSPITALITY AS DEFINE?
Hospitality The term is derived from the Latin
word “hospitare” which means “to receive a
guest”.
Hospitality it implies whereby a guest who is
away from home is welcomed by a host
where basic necessities are provided such as
food, beverages, and lodging. 
Hospitality An industry comprises
business entity of food, beverages, lodging or
a combination of these businesses to
travelers during stay in a destination.

REALATIONSHIP OF TOURISM AND
HOSPITALITY
The Tourism and Hospitality Industry: a powerful driver of the
economic engine of nations. The important roles of tourism and
hospitality as the main instrument in socioeconomic development of
any nation cannot be overstated. Tourism and hospitality has
become one of the world’s largest and fastest growing industries and
it is because of the several factors, such as rising levels of income,
improvements in transportation and the low cost airline services,
easier access to destinations by tourists and the diversification of the
industry with new market niches.

The Lodging Components

Lodging involves providing overnight or


even long-term services to guest. For
many people, lodging is a place to sleep.
For others, lodging facilities not only
provide beds but also entertainment and
recreational facilities.

Recreation and Entertainment Components
• Entertainment originated from the
traditional duties of a host to entertain
his/her guest, many countries ago
innkeepers, tavern-keepers, and their
descendants have attended to their
guest. 
• The concept of entertaining guest is
broader. Guests are offered different
kinds of entertainment and recreational
activities such as golf, tennis, hiking,
boating, swimming, handball, casino
gambling, and concerts.

Travel and Tourism Components

Travel and Tourism are used together


as an umbrella term to refer to those
business that provide primary services
to travelers. Include not only food and
beverage services, lodging services,
recreation and entertainment services,
but also transportation services and the
services of travel agencies and tour
operator.

Transportation

The main purpose of transportation


is to make it possible for people to
go from one place to another. There
are many ways to do this, from the
primitive and simple to the modern
and complex. The common means
of transportation are automobiles
recreational vehicles, buses, trains,
ships and airplanes.

Travel Agencies and Tour Operators
• Travel agencies and tour operators are
modern additions to the travel and tourism
world
• Travel Agent- is one who sells travel services
in a travel agency. he or she sell travel
services that are assembled by others into
packages.
• Tour Operators- are wholesalers who make
the necessary contacts with hotels, airlines
and other providers of travel services and
advise packages which will appeal to retail
buyers. They are volume purchasers who are
able to negotiate lower prices because of their
high volume purchases.

Four Basic Elements have been used as
criteria for defining travelers and/or tourist.
these are:
• Distance- A measure that has been used to
distinguish travel away from home is the
distance traveled on the trip. A trip defined as
each time a person goes to a place at least 100
miles away from home and returns. 
• Length of Stay at the Destination- Use as a
criteria for defining traveler is the length of stay
at a destination refer to the definition of Tourist
and excursionists
• Residence of the Traveler- It is important to
know where people live.

Purpose of travel- it can divided into
six
1. visiting friends and relatives
2. conventions, seminars and meetings
3. business
4. outdoor recreation- hunting, fishing,
boating and camping
5. entertainment- sightseeing, theater
and sports
6. personal- family, medical, funeral,
wedding and others.

be a historic site, museum, park,
