    Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a French painter and founder of French Impressionism. He was born in Paris to a grocer father and singer mother and received drawing lessons from Jacques-François Ochard. Eugène Boudin taught him to use oil paints. Monet worked with Alfred Sisley and Auguste Renoir and was accepted to the Salon in 1865. He met his first art dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel, and had 500 of his early works destroyed. Monet's style was characterized by Impressionism, with fast brushstrokes and light colors in works like Impression, Sunrise and his Water Lilies series.
