SWOT
SWOT analysis (or SWOT matrix) is a strategic
planning technique used to help a person or
organization identify Strengths, Weaknesses,
Opportunities, and Threats related to project
planning this could relate to your organisation or
you personally.

Strengths
Characteristics of the business, individual or project that give it an
advantage over others.
This could include
• Expertise
• Experience
• Qualifications
• Facilities
• Equipment
• Finance

Weaknesses
Characteristics that place the individual, business or project at a
disadvantage relative to others.
This could include
• A lack of expertise and experience
• Not possessing appropriate qualifications
• Poor facilities
• Equipment Issues
• Unreliable Finance
• A Global Pandemic

Opportunities
Elements in the environment that the business or project could
exploit to its advantage.
This could include
• Government initiatives (emphasis on a particular sector i.e. fishing)
• New markets (Expanding economies such as India and China)
• Trade deals (post Brexit expansion of trade)
• New technology (improved efficiency and effectiveness)

Threats
Elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the
business or project.
These could include
• Recession (shrinking economies, less imports and exports)
• A reduction of demand (outdated or obsolete products)
• New technology (reduction of personnel)
• Legislation (carbon neutrality or trade restrictions)
• Financial (cash flow problems or time penalties)

Internal and External Factors

SWOT analysis aims to identify the key internal and external factors
seen as important to achieving an objective. SWOT analysis groups key
pieces of information into two main categories

• Internal factors: the strengths and weaknesses internal to the


organization
• External factors: the opportunities and threats presented by the
environment external to the organization
