A. Red Sky in the Afternoon
• The refraction index of light (in the angled atmosphere) bends faster
the high energy photons than the low energy ones, means, blue and
violet light are the first to disappear, since they bend towards the
ground, while the red light doesn’t bend so much, reaching longer
distances in the atmosphere. It results red light to reach longer
distances, so people see the sun as red/yellow that are the only colors
that can reach the ground before the sun completely disappear in the
horizon.
B. Why the Sky is Blue
• Light moves through the atmosphere, most of the longer wavelengths
pass straight through. Little of the red, orange and yellow light is
affected by the air.
• However, much of the shorter wavelength light is absorbed by the gas
molecules. The absorbed blue light is then radiated in different
directions. It gets scattered all around the sky.
C. Pot Gold at the end of the Rainbow
• Physics teaches that rainbows are created when the sunlight reflects
off of raindrops, breaking up the lightpot0gold into different
wavelengths of color.
This atmospheric phenomenon is most likely to occur immediately after
a rain shower, when the sun is shining again, but condensation still
lingers in the air.
LIGHT
• Light is a kind of energy that can travel through space in a form of
wave.
• We highlight here the arrangement of colors of light as ROYGBIV
when dispersion happens.
• This phenomenon is observed when white light passes through a
prism.
• Light from the sun and flashlights looks white, but it’s really a mixture
of many colors.
