NURSING DIAGNOSIS
DEFINITION

It is an abnormal, multiplication and proliferation of brain cells.


 A tumour is a mass of cancerous cells within the brain.
TYPES

 Gliomas: Tumour of neuroepithelial/glial cells (Supportive tissue of brain)


1. Meninges Tumours: They arise from linings of brain, e.g., meningiomas.
2. Pituitary Tumours
3. Hematopoietic Tumours: Include malignant lymphoma.
SIGNS/SYMPTOMS

 Symptoms due to ↑es ICP, e.g.,


 Headache (especially in morning)
 Vomiting
 Malaise
 Papilledema
1. Alteration in consciousness.
 Neurologic Deficits
 Disturbances in speech and memory
 Confusion
 Depression
 Personality and behavioural changes
 Visual agnosia
 Gait disturbance
 Dysphagia
 Incontinence
 Coma
1. Seizures.
DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION:-

Radiography of skull
C.T. Scan
Lumber puncture
 MRI (to visualize tumour, more useful than CT).
MANAGEMENT:-

Surgical Management
Craniotomy: Surgical removal of a portion of skull.
Laser resection or ultrasonic aspiration.
Radiation therapy
 Chemotherapy.
COMPLICATIONS:-

Increased ICP
Neurologic deficit
1. Death.
NURSING MANAGEMENT:-

 Nursing Diagnosis
 Acute pain related to brain mass or surgery.
 Risk for injury related to neurological deficits
 Anxiety related to diagnosis, treatment modalities, surgery rational.
1. Imbalanced nutrition related to neurologic function disturbance
