SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE AND LIVELIHOOD
PROMOTION (SALP)

● A FPO's principal goal is to help its members earn more money by promoting their products
and offering crucial agricultural services. In a country like India, where the majority of
farmers are small and marginal, FPO has become increasingly vital in enabling them to
access the national and global markets, as well as a variety of critical services.

● ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

● Promotion of Organic Framing

● Formation of Farmers Clubs and CIG’s
● Promotion of Millet Cultivation
ENVIRONMENT AND ECOLOGY
● The environment and ecology play a vital role in the well living of humans in any part of
the world. Our entire life support system is reliant on the health of all environmental
components.

● ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:
● Promotion of Organic Farming and Sustainable Agriculture
● Development of Micro Watersheds for Natural Resource Managements
● Forestry and Agro Horticulture Promotion
● Revival of Traditional Land and Water Management Systems of Western Odisha
● Jungle Bachao Abhiyan (Save the Forests Initiative)
● Fluorosis Mitigation (An issue of groundwater contamination and Public Health)
PROMOTION OF FARMERS PRODUCERS ORGANIZATIONS
(FPOS)
● Sustainable agriculture is a farming system that focuses on growing crops and livestock with
minimal environmental and ecological impacts, as well as producing food and fibre in a
sustainable manner to meet present demand as well as future generations' desires.

● SVA has provided numerous trainings and hand-holding support to these FPOs in order for
them to become self-sufficient in a few years.

● Following the initial success of those FPOs, SVA, with the help of NABARD, has promoted
an additional 13 FPOs in the districts of Kalahandi, Nuapada, Sambalpur, and Deogarh.

● All FPOs are now registered with the e-Nam (electronic National Market) and participating
in the national market to take benefit of the e-Nam. SVA has been aiding FPOs in
establishing market links with processing industries and financial institutions as a POPI.
WADI (TRIBAL DEVELOPMENT FUND) PROJECT
● The WADI model has proven to be one of the most successful of the several models for
sustainable livelihood explored in India's tribal regions. In this strategy, tribal farmers who
live near forests and have degraded fields are encouraged to build a one-acre orchard in
which they plant a few fruit-bearing trees and a few Agro-forestry species as border crops.

● ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

● Processing & marketing of Agro and Horticultural produces

● Development of orchards (fruit, plantation, herbal crops, and forest plants).
● Development of women through On-Farm and Non-Farm Income Generating Activities
and Formation of SHGs.
● Soil and moisture conservation measures and Water Resources Management
SOME OTHER INITIATIVES INCLUDE

● Promotion of Agro Industries which include Pulses & Cereals Processing Industry, Fruit &
Vegetable Processing Industry, Village Oil Industry etc.

● Initiatives for Financial Inclusion where banks are providing basic "no frills" accounts with
no or extremely low minimum balances, as well as a General Purpose Credit Card (GCC)
facility without the requirement of collateral, to enable rural residents to obtain credit
without difficulty.
SOME OTHER INITIATIVES INCLUDE

● Gram Swaraj Abhiyan under which SVA is promoting Various low-cost and relevant

technologies in the fields of cottage industry, agriculture, horticulture, and allied activities

● Programmes for Relief and Rehabilitation where volunteers are being trained in

Community Disaster Preparedness initiatives and during droughts and other natural

catastrophes, assistance is provided to local organisations and communities to carry out

relief and rehabilitation efforts for the locals to ensure rapid response times.
TRAINING AND CAPACITY BUILDING

● Farmers and development workers have been able to improve their understanding of rural
development thanks to the Technology Training and Resource Centres (TTRC) established
by Sahabhagi Vikash Abhiyan.

● Farmers and Social Workers from various Voluntary

Organizations and Government Institutions from within
and beyond the state are visiting all of the TTRCs of the
Sahabhagi Vikash Abhiyan (SVA).
GOOD GIFT PROGRAMME
● Support to households has been provided under the good gift programme. Sahabhagi Vikash
Abhiyan has undertaken the following activities with financial support from the G.B.
Charity Advisory Trust's Good Gift programme.

● This programme has directly assisted 485 economically disadvantaged families in

supplementing their income.
SVA AND COVID-19
● Awareness generation programme on novel COVID 19. Demonstration on washing hands
using soap, emphasis on maintaining hygienic behavioural practices, social distancing and
use of mask to prevent COVID 19.
● Amidst the ongoing pandemic of Covid 19 followed by lockdown in the country, Farmer
Producer Companies promoted by SVA-Sahabhagi Vikash Abhiyan have been trying their
best to do market linkages and facilitate sales so that the farmers are not affected and they
get a fair price from their produces.

CURRENT STATUS OF WOMEN IN AGRICULTURE

• As per a report of OXFAM one-third of the female labour in India are not paid as they work in
the farms owned by their husband, father or brother.

• During peak of the cropping season, women farmers in India work about 3,300 hours, which is
double of the 1,860 hours work done by their male counterparts.

• Women labors are paid 60% of what men are paid as they have lower bargaining power

5. Schemes Focusing on Men Farmers

CURRENT STATUS OF WOMEN IN FPO’s

• To give due share, legal recognition and the inclusion of women as decision making members
in the FPOs being promoted

• FPOs being promoted by NABARD with help of local NGOs and Non-Profit organizations are
focusing on community development through social inclusion by including landless women
farmers
CURRENT STATUS OF WOMEN IN FPO’s

• As per the National Paper PLP(2020-2021) by NABARD, and Study by Azim Premji University,
less than 3% out of all FPOs in the country are WFPOs.

• Only 23% of FPOs have at least one women in the Board of the Directors.
SVA’s GENDER POLICY
• To integrate gender and development / sustainable development approach in all its
programmes, projects and policies and ensure gender equitable outcomes.

• To create a conducive environment within SVA for women and men to work on equal terms.

• The FPOs promoted by SVA are backed by NABARD and SFAC. So, the mandate for the mixed
FPOs is to have at least one woman as member of the Board of the directors.

• Due to this mandate FPOs include women include women in the governing body which
strengthens the gender inclusion. Due to lack of any mandate regarding number of women
shareholders in the FPO there are very less women members as shareholders in SVA promoted
FPOs.
Analysis
Women in Agriculture
• Women are not getting their due recognition for their contribution.
• Ignored during decision making and are being exploited.

Gender Inclusion in FPOs

• Women representation in FPOs is negligible.
• Women are not being encouraged much to join FPOs.
• The potential and experience of women who are part of SHGs are underutilized.
Suggestions
• Both the Government entities and NGOs supporting and promoting FPOs
should mandate the inclusion of certain percent of women as members.
• More Women should be included in the Board of The Directors of the FPO and
allowed to mange different operations.
• SGHs can be used as a good entry point of FPOs. The convergence of SHGs
and FPOs would encourage more participation of women in FPO.
• As the government is eyeing to reach 10000 FPOs by 2024, it should focus on
promoting WFPs.
