WHAT IS GREEN BUILDING?

• Green building is a resource-efficient method

of construction that produces healthier
buildings which have less impact on the
environment and cost less to maintain.
• This sustainable approach to construction
accounts for a building’s entire life cycle:
siting, design, construction, operation,
maintenance, renovation and demolition.
WHAT ARE LOW-EMITTING MATERIALS?

• Low-emitting materials are products that do not release significant

pollutants into the indoor environment.
• Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are chemicals found in many
common products and building materials that can escape into the air
and cause illness and allergic reactions.
• These emissions are one of the contributors to the situation known as
“sick building syndrome” (SBS) in which building occupants
experience health and comfort effects.
EFFECT OF VOC’S

• According to the reports, concentrations of many VOCs,

released by a wide variety of products, are consistently higher
indoors (up to ten times) than outdoors.
• Paints, sealants, manufactured wood products, and adhesives
as well as some furnishings and carpet systems often release
VOCs.
Why choose Low Emitting Materials?

• That new paint and carpet smell in a home, school

or building isn’t just annoying. It can actually be
hazardous to your health.
• Many of the building materials we use every day
emit chemicals during and after installation .
Why choose Low Emitting Materials?

This includes materials such as:

• Interior paints
• Interior adhesives and sealants
• Flooring and carpeting
• Manufactured wood products
• Furniture and upholstery
• Ceilings, walls, thermal and acoustic
insulation.

Increased awareness of possible health

led to a demand for products lower in

Incorporate Low- Low-and no-VOC products are now

emitting widely available.

Materials For example, for interior paints and

coatings, low-VOC emitting products
have concentrations below 50 g/L.
There are several certification programs for products
such as GreenGuard, Indoor Advantage by Scientific
Certification Systems, and Green Seal Standards.

How to There are also industry-specific certification

Incorporate Low- programs such as the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI)
Green Label programs that test for and certify low
emitting emissions from carpet, cushion and adhesives.

Materials
Paints and finishes made from latex (water) based,
which are generally less toxic than oil-based
paints.
Due to increased awareness of possible
health risks, latex paints on the market today
are equal or better in quality and durability
than conventional formulas.
How to
Incorporate Low- Not all latex-based formulas are low in
emitting VOC’s, however, and a few oil-based products
now qualify as low-VOC.
Materials
There are many hard, low-formaldehyde
flooring options on the market.
As formaldehyde occurs naturally in all

formaldehyde free.

Resiliency
• The ability to prepare and plan for, absorb,
recover from and more successfully adapt to
adverse events.

• If humanity was to immediately stop

releasing carbon dioxide, the climate would
continue to change.

• The greenhouse gases that we have already

dumped into the atmosphere could take
millennia to dissipate.
Resiliency
• Superstorm Sandy generated over 8 million cubic
yards of debris across the nine hardest-hit counties
in New Jersey in only one day.

• Damaged and contaminated materials include

waterlogged drywall, plaster, insulation,
flooring, carpets, mattresses, and upholstered
furniture.

• This can contaminate groundwater.

Clare
• A line of 56 colors in recycled-resin cans
with its zero-VOC formula.

• Clare acrylic latex paint is formulated

without toxic air contaminants, hazardous
air pollutants.

• Or any chemicals on the EPA's chemicals

of concern list.
ECOS paints
• Water-based, odorless, non-toxic
paint. No VOCs

• Offering almost unlimited shades (1,300-

plus)

• They'll match any color you present to

one of their own.
Natura paint
• Being eco-friendly by reformulating
and discontinuing high-VOC product
lines

• Introducing its 100% acrylic Natura paint

in 2014.

• Now available in thousands of colors and

three finishes (flat, eggshell, and semi-
gloss) .
The Healthy Paint Co.
• The Healthy Paint Co. makes natural
paint.

• Its food-based wall paint is made with milk

casein, food-grade bamboo, food
emulsifiers.

• Natural preservatives, in addition to natural

fungicides and mildew-retardants.
Earth Pigments' Pigment Powders

• Custom paint color with Earth Pigments'

all-natural, non-toxic Pigment Powders.
