Equations for the Horizontal

Motion of a Projectile
• Using another method using an Equation for Time
of Flight.
• Formula

• Where: T = time
Vi = initial velocity
g = 9.81 m/s2
Example

• A football is kicked with an initial velocity of

25 m/s at an angle of 450 with the
horizontal. Determine the time of flight, the
horizontal displacement, and the peak
height of the football.
Given
• Given:
vi = 25 m/s
acc =g = 9.81 m/s2
angle = 45 degree
Required : Time of flight
Formula
T = 2vi sin /g
•T = 2( 25 m/s) sin (45) / 9.81 m/s2
•T = (50 m/s) (0.70711) / 9.81 m/s2
•T = 35.355 m/s / 9.81 m/s2
•Cancel m/s and m/s2
•What remain is sec
•T = 3.60 s
• Determine the horizontal displacement.
This is referred to Range (R)
• Given:
• vi = 25 m/s
• angle = 45 degree
• g = 9.81 m/s2
• Required: Horizontal range (R)
Solution

• R = vi2 sin 2 / g
• R = (25 m/s)2 sin2(45 degree) / 9.81 m/s2
• R = (625 m2/s2) sin(90 degree) / 9.81 m/s2
• R = (625 m2/s2) (1) / 9.81 m/s2
• R = (625 m2/s2) / 9.81 m/s2
• Cancel the units m2s2 and m/s2
• R = 63. 71 m
• C. Determine the peak height of the
football.
Given: vi = 25 m/s
g = 9.81 m/s2
Required: the peak height of the football.
• Solution

• H max = ((25 m/s)(sin 45))2 / 2(9.81 m/s2)

• H max = (625 m2/s2)( 0.7071068)2 / 19.62 m/s2
• H max = (625 m2/s2)(0.50000) / 19.62 m/s2
• Hmax = 312.50 m2/s2 / 19.62 m/s2
• Cancel units m2/s2 and m/s2
Hmax = 15.93 m
• Seatwork( 10 points each)
• 1. A long jumper leaves the ground with an
initial velocity of 12 m/s at an angle of 28-
degrees above the horizontal. Determine
the time of flight, the horizontal distance,
and the peak height of the long-jumper.
• 2. A projectile is fired with initial velocity of
75 m/s at an angle 350 above the
horizontal on a long flat firing range.
Determine: maximum height reached by
projectile; total time in the air; and how far
away the object hits the ground.
