LAB ACTIVITY
(Bar Pendulum experiment)

AIM:-
To determine the acceleration due to gravity (g) by
means of a compound pendulum.
plot a graph of length of pendulum from center of
mass (d) vs time period.
EXPERIMENTAL STEUP:-
MEASUREMENTS:-
for 5 oscillation
(d) = length form center of mass
T1,T2,T3 = time period for 5 oscillation
Tavg. = average of T1,T2 and T3
DATA ANALYSIS:-
x-axis = d (length from COM)
y-axis = Time period
zoomed in image of graph depicting the
similar curve as expected
CALCULATION OF g and k :-

L = (AB'+ BA')/2 and L = (CD' + DC')/2

No. of L(cm) T(sec) g(cm/sec^2) k(cm)

Observation
1. ABB'A' 45 1.478 812.42 24.29

2. CDD'C' 55 1.427 1065.37 24.45

mean value of 'g' :-
g(avg.) = (g1+g2)/2
= (812.42+1065.32)/2
= 938.87
= 9.3887 (in m/sec^2)

mean value of 'k' :-

k(avg.) = (k1+k2)/2
= (24.29+24.45)/2
= 24.37
RESULT AND CONCLUSION:-

The expected value of g was 980

cm/s^2 but we got the mean value of g
as 938.87 cm/s^2 which means we have
an error of +0.4113% which is very
small and considerable.  Also we got the
value of k as 24.37 cm.
From the graph it is also seen that the
point A, B, B', A' has same time period
also the points C, D, D', C' has, thus it
proves that we have 4 different points
for same time period.
Error Analysis:-
1. Length of compound pendulum was
measured using a ruler with least count
1mm.
2. Angle of deviation could have been
more than 5 degrees.
3. Friction and air drag have not been
taken into account.
4. Stop watch with least count 1/100 of a
second was used.
5. Calculations have been done using
decimal numbers having at
maximum 3 decimal places.
6. Values have been rounded off where
needed.
