Introduction
• GSM & GPS based remote data telemetry will provide effective,
real time vehicle location, mapping & reporting the information
value & will add improving the level of service provider.
• Telemetry is an automated communications process by which
measurements & other data will collected at remote/inaccessible
points & will transmits to receiving equipment for monitoring.
• Tracking has now been a recent trend followed everywhere. This
process helps us to collect details & at the same time prevent
robbery of devices being tracked.
• The project “GPS & GSM/GPRS based remote data telemetry
System‟ will employs Arduino as its chief component for
implementation to keep track of vehicles/object in recent times.
… Cont’
• The project will use GPS receiver for calculates its position by
precisely timing the signals will sent by GPS satellites.
• Each satellite continually transmits messages include the time
message will transmit & Satellite position at time of message
transmission & utilizes a GSM modem as a replacement for one of
the GPS device to ensure two-way communication process.
• The GSM modem & SIM card combination employs same
technique as of a normal cell-phone to implement tracking
process.
System Architecture
• The overall system architecture composes a GPS satellite receiver
& GSM module embedded inside the on-board unit.
• GSM network infrastructure is used to create the communication
b/n the on-board unit & the central station.
• The central station is used to display the position of the object
based on the information will received from on-board unit
through SMS.
System architecture of GPS & GSM based remote
data telemetry
… Cont’
• A GPS receiver will calculate its position by precisely timing the signals sent
by GPS satellites.
• The OBU will contains this GPS receiver & GSM Module which will used to
communicate with the local GSM network.
• The data will collect by the OBU device is will send to the central station via
SMS through the local GSM network.
Here, the steps will be involved in the system:
 Data will be captured by the OBU by using the GPS to determine location.
 Captured data will be stored in memory of OBU.
 Stored data will be transfer to central station by using mobile network or by
connecting the object mount unit to computer.
Statement of the Problem
• Mobile objects such as vehicles & animals can be relocated out of
their area & there is no easy way to locate & find lost objects.
• In addition to this, most of the transport management systems
spatially in our country Ethiopia disseminate & locate buses in a
traditional way (for eg. ASU).
• This creates a huge amount of cost for fuel consumption & also
makes the transport facility inconvenient.
• So, developing a tracking system will helps to know where a
vehicle is located at the exact time & how far the car has travelled,
which helps to minimize irrelevant fuel consumption that travels
by the driver.
• The project will give a solution for the transport management
systems where an object is located & display the exact location &
time to the user through a mobile handset/computer.
Objective
 General Objective
• Developing a remote data telemetry system to track the location
of an object/vehicle using GPS and GSM/GPRS module.

 Specific Objectives
• In order to meet the main objective, the project set out the
following specific objectives:
• Literature review & Data collection
• To build a transmitter module (OBU) & embedded system on an
object
• To interface GPS & GSM/GPRS module with a Arduino UNO
• Analyze and System implementation
• Finally make conclusions and give recommendations
Literature Review
• The project presents some telemetry based researches:
• In [1], these project Vehicle Detection with GPS and GSM modem
is designed to avoid accident use an accident detection unit which
will be fitted inside the front & rear bonnet of the car.
• This accident detection unit consists of two metallic plates which
are kept at little distance apart from each other.
• In case of accident, if the car is hit to some other vehicle or an
object then due to the impact the two metal plates will come in
contact with each other.
• Due to this a signal will be sent to microcontroller.
• Once microcontroller gets signal from metal plates, then it will
immediately turn on the buzzer.
… Cont’
• In [2], This project come up with an idea of tracking the soldier as
well as to give the health status of the soldier during the war, w/c
enables the army personnel to plan the war strategies.
• By using the location sent by the GPS modem, the base station can
understand the position of soldier.
• These project similar with our project by the system is
microcontroller based that consists of GPS & GSM.
• These project is differ with our project by there is temperature
sensor, heartbeat sensor & amplifier in case of these Upon
receiving the SMS, the text message in mobile shows the solder‟s
GPS co-ordinates also the health status is displayed. In this way the
army officials can keep a track of all their soldiers. But in our
project SMS text format there is no information like health states.
Methodology
 Related project, newspapers, research’s from previous/early year.
After reviewing sufficient papers, come up to outline the ff
methods to accomplish the project.
 Outlining the system using block diagram & designing each block
 Designing the block diagram, mathematically analyze all the
components to build the transmitter unit.
 Identifying all the components of the hardware, building up the
whole system.
• Developing Algorithm for the Arduino (firmware design) & write
the firmware code.
• Compiling & testing our firmware code, we load it into the board
and then, test & refine the system.
• Collect remote data using ASU campus as a sample.

• The following materials will be needed:

• GPS and GSM/GPRS module
• Arduino UNO
