Introduction
• Energy is the fuel for growth of a country or generally growth of the world.
• An increased access to electricity enhances opportunities for industrial
development and improves health and education.
• But currently still about 37% of the world’s population have no access to
electricity.
• Most of rural people depend almost exclusively on biomass for their daily
energy need.
• The Ethiopian Govt’ tried to connect this rural location by using national
grid extension for the last two decades.
• However, still the current electricity access is below 50% and the real
connection is less than 14%.
• Today it is widely accepted that Renewable energy system (RES) have a
large potential to contribute to the strengthening and development of
national sustainable energy infrastructures.
Statement of the Problem
• Energy consumption involves all energy harnessed from every energy source
applied towards activity across all industrial and technological sectors in every
country.
• Energy supply thereby is covered by bio-energy which accounts about 90% of
final energy consumption, while a transport sector is predominantly run by
imported petroleum; which accounts about 4.5% and the modern energy
contributes only about 6% of the overall energy consumption.
• Nowadays Ethiopia total installed capacity of electric generation is about 4.5
GW (2019) mainly generated by hydro (90%) and followed by wind energy
(7.6%). Only few researchers were conducted in Ethiopia to solve problem in
rural energy access and empower the development of alternative energy
technology.
• The lack of electricity access causes for social and economic problems such
as poverty, poor health services, low quality of education, gender inequity
and so on.
• Therefore, this Project will presents the review of Ethiopia renewable energy
potential with current state in a more comprehensive way and provides
valuable information for researchers, industrial companies and decision
Objective
General Objective

• Design and Implementation of standalone Photovoltaic System

with battery bank

Specific objectives

• To select the best optimized renewable source of energy

• To analyze the power and energy demand of the community

• To select appropriate solar modules depending on the energy

demand

• To determine the demand of the community at the life span of the

project
Literature Review
• Renewable energy is energy that is collected from renewable resources,
which are naturally replenished on a human timescale, such as sunlight,
wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat [4, 5].
• Worldwide investments in renewable technologies amounted to more
than US$286 billion in 2015, with countries like China and the United
States heavily investing in wind, hydro, solar and biofuels [6, 1].
• The thesis investigated by Berihun G/Yohannes (2017), A standalone
wind/micro hydro/battery hybrid system and only micro hydro system
options are considered separately in order to electrify the selected
village.
• For the first option many feasible hybrid system combinations are listed
and sorted according to their net present cost (NPC).
• Accordingly, levelized cost of energy (COE) and breakeven grid extension
distance depend on the selected sensitivity variables.
… Cont’
• The thesis investigated by Solomon T/Michael has been design off-grid
hybrid system provide electricity to rural community of Haressaw among
the sub-districts of Atsbi district in the regional state of Tigray, Ethiopia.
• This paper conducts Primary load demand of 1505KWh/day, peak load of
284KW, deferrable energy is about 17KWh/day, and deferrable peak load
of 3.6KW was involved during optimization of the power system.
• Well known freeware HOMER modeling tool have been used to design
the off-grid system.
• Wind and solar energy are considered as primary sources to supply
electricity directly to the load and to charge battery bank when excess
generation is happened however in peak demand times diesel generator
could also be engaged.
Methodology
• Different methodologies have been applied to address each specific
objectives of this project:

• The site should be identified, problems of the community is clearly

stated, data required for the project will be collected through various
data collection mechanisms and different literatures are surveyed to
identify the way to do the project, to get data and to enhance
academic knowledge and research skills.

• The data collected from various sources will be analyzed using

software tool and integrated to give solution for the problems and
challenges raised at the start of the project.
… Cont’
Site Location
• The case study area is identified by directly visiting the site.
• Site map in Woreda level obtained from Google earth and Google
Map were used.

earth map)
… Cont’
Data Collection and Literature Survey

• There will be two sources of data collection methods which will be:

Primary data gathering and secondary data collections.

The primary data gathering conducted through use of questionnaires, site visits
and interviews about the selected site.

Secondary data gathered from books, journals, newspapers, magazines,

conference papers, reports, etc.

Design and implementation of standalone electrical power system

• Based on the data collected from the case study site the system will design and
also implemented to satisfy the consumers in our campus.
Scope of the project
The project focuses on selected renewable energy resources such as
solar PV electrical power generating with storage battery

The system used to increase the reliability of electrical power supply to

the given community.

Significant of the Project

• The main contribution of the project will be explored and put forward
the appropriate standalone solar PV power generation system design
and implementation with energy management.

• To reduce the power interruption during peak load of the utility,

• To reduced the electric consumption of the university from the utility

Expected out put
• The project will protect and control the day to day electrical power
supply in ASU according to:

Reducing power interruption in the case of peak load

And also introduce or promote the technology in our city Assosa

Increase practical skills of other researchers in our university and create

a good habit of electrical power generation from renewable source of
energy.

It will enhance the satisfaction of the employees and students in the
university according to using continuous supply of electrical power
without any interruption.
