WHO IS ST. THOMAS


AQUINAS?
 Great Italian Philosopher and Theologian of the
Medieval period.
 Foremost classical proponent of Natural Theology
at the peak of scholasticism in Europe.
 Founder of the Thomistic School of Philosophy
and Theology

LIFE
 Born on 1225 in Roccasecca, near Aquino, Sicily,
Italy.
 Parents : Count Landulph and Countess Theodora
 At the age of 5, he began his early education at a
monastery
 At the age of 16, continued his studies at the
University of Naples

LIFE
 He became a Dominican monk in 1242
 1244 – studied under Albertus Magnus in Cologne
and then in Paris
 1248 – graduated Bachelor of Theology (Paris)
 1256 – started to travel lecturing on Theology in
France and Italy
 1270 – the Bishop of Paris issued an edict
condemning his teaching

 He became a Dominican monk in 1242

 1274 – fell ill and died at Cistecian monastery of
Fossa Nuova
 1277 – after his death, the Bishop of Paris and the
Bishop of Oxford issued another which
condemned Thomas’s theses as heretical
- Excommunicated posthumously
 1324 – 50 years after, Pope John XXII pronounced
him a Saint of the Catholic Church
- His Theology began its rise again

 1568 – named Doctor of the Church.
