6. TRUTH AND FREEDOM
How do we explain, “The truth will make you free”?

 Jesus’ statement,
“You will know the
truth, and the truth
will make you free”
(John 8:32), refers to
the journey of life.

 When a person knows

the truth about his
life’s purpose, which
is the communion
with God, he becomes
free from ignorance
and deceit.

7. TRUTH AND FREEDOM
In what sense is Jesus,
“The way, the truth, and the life”?
It refers to Man’s pursuit of happiness, which usually comprises
four stages:

1.PLEASURE: Initially, Man tries to find satisfaction in physical

pleasures; only to discover that these give brief rushes of joy,
followed by sickness and sadness.

2.WEALTH: Next, he searches for contentment in the accumulation

of wealth; but in time he feels frustration for his deteriorating
possessions, and the unquenchable anxiety for more wealth.

3.EGOISM: Subsequently, he struggles to quench his thirst for

happiness by boosting his self-esteem and pride; but as sickness
and ageing take their unstoppable toll, egoism deteriorates into
depression and despair.

4.GOD: Finally, man realizes the truth: that perfect happiness

cannot be faund in contingent things but in the communion with
God. Sons of Holy Mary Immaculate

9. TRUTHFULNESS
What is Truthfulness?
 Truthfulness is the attitude of being sincere in words and
upright in actions. Deceitful persons, like the Pharisees,
contradict with their deeds their words; as Jesus commented:
“They do not practice what they preach” (Matthew 23:3).

God is the absolute truth, because he knows all things and never contradicts himself;

hence, more truthful we are, the closer we go to God.

10. TRUTHFULNESS
How is the fairy-tale of Pinocchio related to the Gospel?

 Carlo Collodi’s purpose in

publishing, The
Adventures of Pinocchio
(Florence, 1883), was to
express Jesus’ teaching on
truthfulness and honesty in
a novel.
 Pinocchio is a naughty
marionette caught in a
series of misadventures
because of his disobedience
and deceitfulness. Notably,
anytime Pinocchio lies, his
nose becomes longer.
 In time, Pinocchio becomes
truthful and caring. As a Pinocchio’s truthfulness
reward, he becomes human. made him a real man.

11. HONESTY AND DISCRETION
Why are Honesty and Discretion complementary?
 Honesty, which is the attitude of being straightforward in words
and actions, must be complemented with discretion, which is
the quality of avoiding offenses or revealing private information.

12. HONESTY AND DISCRETION
How can we balance Sincerity with Prudence?
 The balance between sincerity and prudence is regulated by a
principle: “Reveal the truth if promoting goodness, but
conceal it when causing harm.”

The witnesses of the Maguindanao Massacre of 2010 ought to reveal

the truth in court, so that justice might prevail.

13. EVANGELIZATION AND MARTYRDOM
Are all Christians called to evangelize?
 All of us Christians are called to preach the Gospel by words and
deeds; as commanded by Jesus: “Go into the whole world
and proclaim the Gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).

14. EVANGELIZATION AND MARTYRDOM
Why is Martyrdom the supreme testimony of Faith?
 Martyrdom is the greatest gift of God for two reasons: first,
because it is the supreme witnessing of faith in God and in the
resurrection; second, because it guarantees eternal salvation.

“Lord Jesus Christ” - were the last words

of the 21 Martyrs of Libya of 2015.

15. LYING
What is Lying?
 Lying is to conceal the
truth for an evil purpose:
this can be done by
testifying the false or by
hiding the facts. Liars are the
Devil’s children, as Jesus
said: “He is a liar and the
father of lies” (John 8:44).
 The so-called white lies,
which conceal the truth for a
good purpose, such as in
diplomacy or in preventing
scandal and harm, are
innocent forms of discretion Lucifer is the supreme deceiver and

she was asked to go back and
gather up all the feathers.
