Conditional Sentence
 A Conditional Sentence is introduced by
subordinating conjunctions: when, if, unless,
even if, only if, in case, supposing that, ect.

 There are five kinds of conditional sentences:


zero, first, second, third, and mixed conditional
sentences.
Conditional Sentence
Zero Conditional
 A conditional sentence which is always true.
If + present simple, present simple
Present simple + if + Present simple
Ex: - If you drop your phone into water, it breaks down.
- If I do not have breakfast, I am hungry.
- If you touch the hot iron, your hand gets burnt.
- People die if they don’t eat.
- You get water if you mix hydrogen and oxygen.
Conditional Sentence
First Conditional
• A conditional sentence which has possible condition and
probable result in the present or future.
If + present tense, …will + base form
…will +base form + if + present tense
Ex: - I will give you the money in case you run out of money.
- She will not love you unless you are a good one.
- If I do not tell her the truth, she will be angry with me.
- She’ll be late if the train is delayed.
- She’ll miss the bus if she doesn’t leave soon.
Conditional Sentence
Second Conditional
 A conditional sentence which is unreal in the future or
present fact.
If + past simple/past continuous, …would + base form
…would + base form + if + past simple/past continuous
Fact:- She is poor. She will not travel all over the world.
Con: - She would travel all over the world if she were rich.
Fact: - She never studies. She will not pass the exam.
Con: - She would pass the exam if she ever studied.
Conditional Sentence
Second Conditional
Fact: I am fat. I do not look handsome.
Con: If I was not fat, I would look handsome.

Fact: We cannot go out. We are studying now.


Con: If we were not studying now, we would go out.
Conditional Sentence
Third Conditional
 A conditional sentence which was unreal in the past.
If + past perfect, …would + perfect infinitive
…would + perfect infinitive…+ if + past perfect
Fact: I was too drunk. I did not have dinner.
Con: If I had not been too drunk, I would have had
dinner.
Fact: His girlfriend had another boy. He committed
suicide.
Con: If his girlfriend had not had another boy, he would
not have committed suicide.

Mixed Conditional
Second + Third
Third + Second
Fact: I did not have dinner. I am hungry now.
Con: If I had had dinner, I would not be hungry now.
Fact: He does not pass the exam now. He did not study for
the
test yesterday.
Con: He would pass the exam now if he had studied for
the test yesterday.
