Infinitive or Gerund
Verbs followed by ‘to’ infinitive
Some verbs can be followed by ‘to’ infinitive.
Ex: My parents were poor; therefore, they could not
afford to send me to college.
Here are the verbs which is used like the above.

Verbs Followed by Either To-Infinitive or
Gerund (no change the meaning)
Some verbs can be followed by both gerund
and ‘to’ infinitive. Their meaning doesn’t
change.
Ex: The teacher advised studying hard.
The teacher advised us to study hard.
Here are the verbs which is used like the above.

Some verbs can be followed by object + ‘to’
infinitive.
Ex: The teacher doesn’t allow us to smoke in the
classroom.

I like watching TV every day.
Like + ‘to’ infinitive: the activity is your
hobby.
I like to sing a song.

Stop
Stop + V-ing: give up.
I stopped smoking two years ago.
Stop + ‘to’ infinitive: stop doing what you are
doing at the moment in order to something
else.
I was reading the book when the phone started to
ring. I stop to answer that phone.

Remember
Remember + V-ing: When you did sth and now you
remember it; after you did sth.
I don’t know how the burglar got in. I clearly
remember locking the door and shutting the
windows.
Try
Try + V-ing: try something to see if it works or solves
the problem .
I´ve got a terrible headache.
Why don´t you try taking an aspirin?
Need
Need + V-ing: sth. needs to be done about sth else
(the meaning is passive).
Look at this room. It needs painting.
Regret
Regret + V-ing: I did sth and now I am sorry about it
(regret for past action).
I now regret not telling you the truth.

Verbs Followed by ‘to’ infinitive or gerund
Mean
Mean + V-ing: involve somebody to do somthing.
If we catch an early train, it will mean getting up
at 6.00..

Help
To help do sth or to help sb do sth.
Everybody helps clean the room.
He helps me clean the room.
