Adjective Clause

A group of words that contains a subject and a predicate of its


own, and has function as adjective.
 noun + relative pronoun/advert
 Relative pronoun are: who, whom, that, whose, which
 Relative adverb are: where, when, why
Ex:
• Who: The boy who always comes to meet our teacher
every day is my closed friend.
• Which: The computer which I use every day is broken
now.
• That: There are a lot of people that live under poverty.

• Whose: I know the man whose bicycle was stolen.


• When: I remember the day when you look down on me.
I remember the day on which you look down me.
• Where: This is the house where he lives in. Or This is the
house in which he lives.
• Why: The reason why he mentions is not good.

Adjective Clause
 There are two kinds of Adjective clause:
Restrictive Relative Clause and Non-
restrictive Relative Clause.
Example
• RRC: The man whom I spoke to yesterday
was Mr. Sovann.
• NRRC: Mr. Sovann, who is my teacher,
comes from Kampong Speu.

Restrictive Relative Clause
 Restrictive Relative Clause is a Dependent Clause
that tells us exactly who or what is being referred to.
 Without this clause, the sentence will not make
sense. It needs to be there.

Ex: I hate the people who are insincere.


I enjoyed the books that you lent me.

 Note: The relative pronoun can be missed out if it is


the object of the relative clause:

Ex: I enjoyed the books that you lent me. OR


I enjoyed the books you lent me.
She’s the girl that I love. OR She’s the girl I
love.
 There are no commas in defining relative clauses.

Non-Restrictive Relative Clause
 Non-Restive Relative Clause is the clauses that give us
extra information about something or someone already
mentioned.
 Who and which are always preceded by a comma in this
clause.
 We use Non-Restrictive Relative Clause after:
 Proper Nouns
 Some Common Nouns that already mentioned.
 The Common Nouns that preceded by long adjective
 Expressions of Quantity
 Modify a whole sentence

Ex: -Hawaii, which consists of eight principal
islands, is a favorite vacation spot.
-I took some children on a picnic, but the smallest
child, who is my son, got jet lag.
-The beautiful and charming girl, whom I
love, contains HIV.
-There are 40 students in my class, most of whom
are from provinces.
-Sally lost her job, which was not
surprising.

Reducing Adjective Clause
 We can reduce adjective clause to adjective phrase
by using present participle, past participle,
apposition, or other types of adjective phrase.
 Present Participle
Ex: Adjective Clause
- The man who is sitting next to me is my
brother.
- There are a lot of peoples who live in my village.
- The members who looked happy after their
victory were cheered by the stadium.

- The crowd which was cheering wildly after being
ended game would not leave the stadium.
- Everyone who will take the TOEFL next month
must preregister.
- The secrets of the universe, which have fascinated
people for centuries, are slowly being revealed.
- The senator who had heard that most people
opposed the new law voted against it.

• Adjective Phrase
- The man sitting next to me is my brother.
- There are a lot of peoples living in my village.
- The members looking happy after their victory were
cheered by the stadium.
- Cheering wildly after being ended game, the crowd would
not leave the stadium.
- Everyone taking the TOEFL next month must preregister.
- The secrets of the universe, having fascinated people for
centuries, are slowly being revealed.
- Having heard that most people opposed the new law, the
senator voted against it.

 Past Participle
Ex: Adjective Clause
-I live in a house which was built in 1960.
-The ideas which are presented in that
book are good.
Adjective Phrase
- I live in a house built in 1960.
- The ideas presented in that book are
good.

 Apposition
Ex: Adjective Clause
- Paris, which is the capital of France, is the most exciting city
in the world.
-Hun Sen, who is the prime minister of Cambodia, is the
strong man.
Adjective Phrase
- Paris, the capital of France, is the most exciting city in the
world.
- Hun Sen, the prime minister of Cambodia, is the strong man.

Ex: Adjective Clause
- The book which is on the table is mine.
- The water that is in the sea is salty.
Adjective Phrase
- The book on the table is mine.
- The water in the sea is salty.
