Domain and Range of a Function

Objectives:
1. Define domain and range of a function given an equation; and
2. Determine the domain of a function given an equation.
FYI on Functions
 Discrete functions consist of
points that are not connected.

 Continuous functions can be

graphed with a line or smooth
curve and contain an infinite
number of points.

Domain of a Function
Generally, the domain is implied to be the set
of all real numbers that yield a real number
functional value (in the range).
Some restrictions to domain:
1. Denominator cannot equal zero (0).
2. Radicand must be greater than or equal to
zero (0), if the index is even.
3. Practical problems may limit domain.
