Learning Outcomes
By the end of this module participants will be able to:

◻ Reflect on their existing teaching and learning practices in science

classroom;
◻ Explore link between content and pedagogical strategies proposed in
SNC;
◻ Demonstrate the use of at least one Interactive Pedagogical Strategy
(IPS) to teach science; and,
◻ Analyse the usefulness of the assigned IPS in enhancing teaching and
learning practices of science.

Themes: Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Earth Sciences &

Space Sciences (Grade 4-5 Science Textbook)

Choose a chapter from assigned themes and apply

principals of ‘active teaching’ and ‘active learning’

how would the selected chapter (e.g. text, visuals, box information, proposed
activities, exercises, project work) help in promoting various aspects of active
teaching and active learning?
Scenario Based Discussion

◻Scenario 1
A teacher taught ‘life cycle of butterfly’. She explained the four stages using blackboard. She
concluded the lesson by assigning homework ‘write all stages of life cycle of a butterfly’.

◻Scenario 2
A teacher taught ‘life cycle of butterfly’. She started with a quiz to find out children’s existing
knowledge. She brought models of different stages to help children understand the concept.
Children were involved through questioning. She helped children to explore life cycle of other
species using available IT resources. She concluded the lesson by assigning homework ‘children
were to explore other example which have similar life cycle as butterfly’.

IPS for Teaching Science

• Does this strategy help to engage students through ‘hands-on’ and ‘minds-
on’ tasks for conceptual understanding?
• Would this strategy help students to write their exams?
• How would it help to rectify misconceptions of students?
• How does this strategy help to relate science content with daily life?
• How would you adapt this strategy for the grades you teach?

Identify content from science textbooks which can be taught

through the assigned IPS.
