Course Code: GENED 6


Course Title: Science, Technology and Society
Credit: Three (3) units
Prerequisite: None
School Year: 2020- 2021 ( First Semester)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to guide undergraduate students to develop critical thinking and creativity as they utilize science in understanding various human conditions and
social issues, explore the role of science and technology in nation-building, analyze scientific ideas, theories, innovations, research, and practices, and discover technological
advancements brought by science to the society.

General course Objective:


At the end of the course :
1. Students are expected to broaden their theoretical and practical understanding of Science, Technology and Society.
2. Students acknowledge that science and the Society are inseparable.
3. Students would recognize the positive benefits of science and technology.

GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES:

A. Cognitive domain:
1. Analyze the concepts, theories, principles, historical events in science in science and its development in various civilizations.
2. Understand issues on climate change, impact of the information age, nanotechnology and genetically modified organisms.
3. Determine the advantages and disadvantages of the scientific advancements.
4. Define the different philosophies, ideas and policies in the field of science and technologies.
5. Understand how research impacted technology advancement.

B. Affective domain:
1. Develop deep appreciation of the role of Science and Technology in the development of people and the society.

C. Psychomotor Domain:
1. Review the history of science and make a timeline highlighting the major discoveries and development in science.
2. Research on several Filipino Scientists and their contributions in the field of science.
3. Research on the connection of indigenous knowledge to science and technology.
4. Determine the possible alternatives to growth and development. List down several ways to promote sustainable living and start a mini-campaign advocating a method of
their choice.
5. Role Playing: Imagine the world without technology. How do you think your day to day life would be?
6. Philosophical Debate: Discuss whether technology is a means to an end oe an end in itself.
7. Construct a Good Life Collage.
8. Compare and contrast two modes of doing the same thing where one involves a more technologically advanced method.
9. Perform a Group skit: Robots that are capable of having emotions; Google and stupidity; Filipinos addiction to different technologies; Waze application.
10. Video Presentation focus on the evolution of transmission of information in various time periods and areas of the world.

Expectations from the students:


It is the students’ responsibility to attend every class prepared and participate actively in the class discussion. He/ she is expected to submit all assignments,
quizzes and take all examinations on the scheduled date. At the end of each session, students are expected to understand all the learning outcomes/
objectives for each topic.

CLASSROOM POLICIES:

Cell Phones

Receiving or sending cell phone calls or text messages in classrooms, computer labs, or library is inappropriate and impolite.  Please turn them off, except in emergency cases and
with the instructor’s permission.

Class Attendance & Participation

Regular attendance, as specified by the instructor, is expected of all students.  Distance Learning in case of assignments as specified by the instructor, is expected of all students
and may be considered for grading purposes the same as "attendance."  Extended absence/non-participation  (due to illness or injury) should be reported to your instructor (and/or
to the SAO or Students Affairs Office immediately. Students who register for a class but fail to commence attendance will be administratively withdrawn .The student remains
liable for tuition and charges incurred upon registration.

Classroom Behaviour & Civility

Being an NZC student requires appropriate adult behaviour and respect for others. Instructors can set classroom rules of conduct, require adherence to standards of civility
appropriate to learning, and have the right to remove anyone for disruption or obstruction of those standards, or for violation of any law or College policy. Please refer to the
Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook

Course Withdrawal

Faculty do not withdraw/drop students for non-attendance.  It is the student's responsibility to officially withdraw/drop, in writing, from a course prior to the withdrawal
deadlines. 

Plagiarism & Cheating

Cheating is obtaining or intentionally giving unauthorized information to create an unfair advantage in an examination, assignment, or classroom situation. Plagiarism is the act of
presenting and claiming words, ideas, data, programming code or creations of others as one's own. Plagiarism may be intentional - as in a false claim of authorship - or
unintentional - as in a failure to document information sources using MLA (Modern Language Association), APA (American Psychological Association) or other style sheets or
manuals adopted by instructors at the College. Presenting ideas in the exact or near exact wording as found in source material constitutes plagiarism, as does patching together
paraphrased statements without in-text citation. Disciplinary action may include a failing grade on an assignment or test, a failing grade for the course, suspension or expulsion
from the college, as described in the Code of Conduct.

All Northern Zambales College Inc. buildings are designated smoke-free.

Time Expectations

For every student, successful college-level work requires three hours for reading, writing, research, discussion, field work, viewing etc. Therefore, students must be inside the
classroom or designated learning area for the duration of each class.

ONLINE CLASSROOM POLICIES

Computer Skills

As a student enrolled in online or blended courses, you will need to have basic computer skills. You are expected to be able to

 Open files in standard formats (e.g., MS Office documents, PDFs, and images)
 Create, save, organize, and maintain digital files
 Interact with the learning management system (LMS)
 Communicate electronically, and
 Knowledge of web browsing and searching

Communication and Participation

In your online and blended courses, you are expected to be an active participant in the course. Even though you may not see your classmates and instructor, online and blended courses are
designed to include discussion and other forms of collaboration and communication. You should be willing and ready to regularly communicate with classmates and instructors online. You will
participate in weekly activities in your courses. You will need to log into your online during class hours. You also need to read reminders and messages in assigned GC;s. Doing so will allow you
to view announcements, participate in class activities, assignments, online discussions, and complete assessments. You are expected to complete all assignments, quizzes, tests, and any other
activities by the due date.
Time Management

Managing your time is essential in online and blended courses. Successful students are very organized in the studies and take ownership of their own learning. A best approach is to set aside
specific time each day to focus on your coursework and studies. Ideally, set that time to be the same time each day.

Study Environment

Setting a consistent, familiar study environment is just as essential as managing your time. If possible, find a well-lit setting that is free of distraction. Schedule your course studies around those
times you have access to your distraction-free environment. You may find that you'll make better use of your time. Prioritize your learning and avoid playing around during online class.

Classroom Policies:
1. Accessibility: Anyone has the equal right to be educated efficiently and comfortably. Students with disabilities are encouraged to discuss their
individual needs for accommodation.
2. Collaboration: You are encouraged to do group study since it is usually more effective that studying alone.
3. Attendance: A student who incurred twelve (12) cumulative absences will be unofficially dropped. To be excused in class, students are required
to present an excuse admittance slip signed by their parent or guardian.
4. 4. Tardiness: If you report to class 15 minutes after the scheduled time, you will be marked late. Three ( 3) counts of tardiness is equal to 1 session
absent.
5. Deadline: Requirements not submitted on or before the deadline due to unacceptable reasons will not be considered. Late submission will only
be considered three (3) days after the due date.
