ASSISTING WITH PERINEAL CARE
• Cleaning the perineum and anus, as well as
the vulva (in women) and the penis (in men).
• 2 reasons why we perform Perineal care:
– Prevention of infection
– Prevention of skin breakdown and odor
Perineal care is routinely done at least once a day, as
part of the bath. Patient with diarrhea or urinary
incontinent needs frequent time for perineal care.
Perineal Care Procedure
• Obtain patient’s consent
• Provide privacy to the patient
• Always check the temperature of the water
• Follow standard precaution & procedure on
perineal care
• Always wash from FRONT to BACK motion
• If the man is uncircumcised, pull the foreskin
to clean the head of the penis
• Rinse thoroughly and gently pat dry. Do not
rub vigorously.
Providing privacy during PERINEAL CARE

1) The bath blanket is placed over the person’s


body so that 1 corner is pointing downward
the patient’s head & the other is between his
legs.
2) The right corner is brought under and around
the patient’s left leg, and the same on the
other leg.
3) The top corner is lifted up to expose only the
perineal area
