European Union
The European Union (EU) is a political and economic union of 27 member
states that are located primarily in Europe.

The EU aims:
 promote peace,
create a single economic and monetary system, 
 break down barriers to trade and borders, 
promote technological and scientific developments,
 protect the environment, 
promote such goals such as a competitive global market and social progress.

Referendum on British membership in the EU​

The referendum took place on June 23, 2016.
To the question "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European
Union?" 51.9% of Britons answered "yes", 48.1% - "no". The turnout was 72.1%.
