LANGUAGE
-is a system of human
communication, either spoken or
written, consisiting of the use of
words in a structured and
conventional way.
-Used by a particular country or
community

SPOKEN LANGUAGE
-The actual use of speech or sounds
that convey meaning to share
thoughts or information.

WRITTEN LANGUAGE
- Communication by means of
written symbols or writing system.

Language VARIETIES
-Many people think that these varieties are just incorrect ways of speaking,
but they're not; they're just different! These varieties have their own ways
of pronouncing words, their own special vocabulary and even their own
grammatical rules.

For example, in American English, you can say, "She's gotten better." But


in British English you'd say, "She's got better.“

Categories of language variety

DIALECT
➜ It includes the differences in grammar,
morphology, vocabulary, syntax and
pronunciation.
➜ Also refers to the way people speak their native
language.

ACCENT
➜ Refers to how people pronounce words and how
someone speaks another language.
TYPES OF DIALECT
REGIONAL DIALECT – spoken in a
particular geographical area.

SOCIOLECT- The variant of language used


by a social group such as a socioeconomic
class, an ethnic group, an age group, etc.

REGISTER
➜ the register is defined as the way a
speaker uses language differently in
different circumstances.
ETHNOLECT – spoken by specific ethnic
group.

PIDGIN
➜ A simplified language drived from two or more
languages used by people who do not share a
common language in a given geographical
location.

CREOLE
➜ A creole is a pidgin that is used by native
speakers and with fully developed grammar
and syntax.

THE 5 LANGUAGE REGISTER


1. FROZEN REGISTER – This form is sometimes
called the static register because it refers to historic
language or communication that is intended to remain
unchanged.
Example: lyrics of a song, prayer, Bible

2. FORMAL REGISTER - the formal


register is used in professional, academic, or
legal settings where communication is expected
to be respectful.
Example : Research paper, academic essays,
resume

3. CONSULTATIVE REGISTER -
People use this register often in conversation
when they're speaking with someone who has
specialized knowledge or who is offering advice.
Example: Teachers and students, doctors and
patient, lawyers and client

4. CASUAL REGISTER - this register is


used among friends and peers, and includes
informal language including slang and
colloquialisms.
Examples: team victory celebration, luch with
friends, a birthday party

5. INTIMATE REGISTER –
sometimes called “private register”. This
register is reserved for close family
members such as parents and children and
siblings, or intimate people such as
spouses.
