    1. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) was patented separately by Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler in 1889. 2. A CVT works by varying the diameter of a driving pulley while simultaneously varying the diameter of a driven pulley to maintain a constant belt length, allowing infinite variation of gear ratios. 3. This variation in pulley diameters is achieved through the use of compressed springs at the driven pulley, allowing its diameter to decrease as the driving pulley diameter increases to keep the belt tight.
