Thrust Horsepower

 Horsepower, the common unit of power. The rate at which word  is done
 To measure thrust produced by turbojet and turbofan engines, the terms ‘power’ and
‘horsepower’ are inappropriate because time and distance elements are not always included.
However, for comparison of thrust and horsepower, it is possible to convert the turbojet and
turbofan. engine thrust to horsepower by using the formula.
 Thrust horsepower of jet engines and rockets is equal to the thrust in pounds force times the
speed of the vehicle in miles per hour divided by 375 (which is equal to one horsepower measured
in mile-pounds per hour).
 For reciprocating engines rather than thrust horsepower the terms brake horsepower and shaft
horsepower are more often used. In gas turbine engines, it is the force-velocity equivalent of the
thrust developed by the engine.
Thrust Horsepower
Formula

Where,
THP = the approx. thrust horsepower produced by a jet engine travelling at a given airspeed
Fn = thrust in pounds produced by the jet engine in flight
mph = airspeed in miles per hour

Note: at 375 mph, 1 pound of thrust = 1 THP

at 750 mph, 1 pound of thrust = 2 THP
Thrust Horsepower Calculation Example

1. First, determine the total thrust. Measure the total thrust in pounds of force.
2. Next, determine the velocity. Measure the velocity of the object in miles per hour.
3. Finally, calculate the horsepower. Calculate the horsepower using the equation above.
