5S Techniques

…Pursuing Excellence

10/28/21
Purpose of 5S

 A clean well-organized, visual workplace is fundamental to

standardization.
 Establishing a normal condition makes the abnormal conspicuous.
 Standardized work depends upon each thing always being in the same
place ... A place for everything and everything in its place.

2
Risk of Unorganised Workplace

 Safety risks due to physical obstacles and hidden dangers

 Time loss searching for materials and tools
 Defects and equipment breakdowns resulting from a dirty environment
 Poor response time to internal/external customers
 Difficulty in distinguishing between what is good/bad,
needed/unneeded, normal/abnormal

3
What is 5S

5S is a fundamental clean-up of the work environment.

5S makes a place for everything and puts everything in its place.

Clean-up leads to improved efficiencies, improved quality, and reduced

costs.

Makes waste appear immediately so that it can be acted upon.

4
Origin of 5S
The original “S”s are actually Japanese words which translate
loosely into English as:

Japanese English
Seiri Sort
Seiton Set in Order
Seiso Shine
Seiketsu Standardise
Shitsuke Sustain

Each S represents one part of a five-step process that can improve

the overall function of a business.

The Red Tag Strategy is an effective way to accomplish the task of

sorting.
 Form a team with members from all affected groups.
 Conduct meeting to lay ground rules and define areas to study (scope).
 Team members to put red tags on everything within the scope.
 Allow affected groups to go about normal work - removing tags from equipment as
it is utilized.
 After that round up all items with tags remaining.
 Conduct a second meeting and verify all tagged items are no longer used.
 Remove the unused items.

Signboards, Equipment boxes, Demarcators, are effective storing

techniques.

Signboards
 Boards laying out what is where.
 Signs with department names or functions
 Typically placed at entrances or at common areas.

Equipment Boxes:
 Shadows/outlines of tools in their positions.
 Can be color coded - position to equipment or position to group of equipment.

Demarcators
 White, yellow, red, orange, etc...
 Tape or paint.
 Identify pathways, inventory storage, waste locations, safety hazards, etc…
 Can be color coded by function/purpose.
 Areas can be numbered for identification

 Arrange items in an easy to use manner

 Anyone can find them
 Anyone can put them away
 The key is “anyone”
