INTRODUCTION
The main purpose of wound dressings is to provide the ideal environment
for wound healing.

Wound healing is most successful in a moist, clean, and warm

environment.

Not all dressings can provide all of these characteristics, and not all
wounds require all of them; hence, the choice of dressing should match
the prevailing wound conditions.

Dressings can be classified as primary or secondary.

• A primary dressing is placed directly on the wound and may provide

absorption of fluids and prevent desiccation, infection, and adhesion of a
secondary dressing
• A secondary dressing is one that is placed on the primary dressing for
further protection, absorption, compression, and occlusion

Schwartz's Principles of Surgery, 9 Edition

Two concepts that are critical when selecting appropriate dressings for
wounds are occlusion and absorption

Absorptive dressings
•Absorptive dressings are useful for wounds with a significant amount of
exudate.
•Examples include wide-mesh gauze, and foam dressings

Gauze
•Function :
• Removing exudates,
• prevents maceration

•Examples : wide-mesh gauze

•Indications : wound-moderate exudate.

DRESSING FOAMS
•Function :
• Protection,
• absorption of exudate

•Examples : Lyofoam, Allevyn, Curafoam, Flexzan, Vigifoam

•characteristics:
• Absorption level : high
• Adhesive quality : Nonadhesive
• Not hydrating

•Indications :
• wound-moderate to high exudate.

Occlusive dressings
•Occlusive dressings provide moisture retention, mechanical protection,
and a barrier to bacteri

DRESSING FILMS
•Function :
• Insulation,
• moisture retention,
• protective barrier acts against bacteria

•Examples : Tegaderm, Mefilm, Carrafilm, etc

•characteristics:
• Absorption level : None
• Adhesive quality : Fully adhesive surface
• Will hydrate slowly

•Indications :
• Superficial wound - low exudate, blister, grazes,
• I.V dressings Sabiston Textbook of Surgery 20th Edition

Hydrocolloids
•Function :
• Insulation, moisture retention, protective barrier acts against bacteria, absorbs water from wound exudates, swells,

•Examples : Duoderm, NuDerm, Comfeel, Hydrocol, Cutinova, Tegasorb

•characteristics:
• Absorption level : Low to moderate
• Adhesive quality : Fully adhesive surface
• Will hydrate moderately to quickly depending on water content

•Indications :
• Blisters,
• light to moderately exuding wounds

Alginates
•Alginates are derived from brown algae and contain long chains of polysaccharides containing
mannuronic and glucuronic acid.

•characteristics:
• Absorption level : High
• Adhesive quality : Nonadhesive
• Not hydrating

•Indications :
• Moderate to heavy e xudate,
• when there is skin loss,
• in open surgical wounds with medium exudation,
• and on full-thickness chronic wounds.

Hydrogels
•Hydrogels are useful in maintaining a moist wound healing and rehydrating the wound to support healing
through autolytic debridement.

•The form can be gel, sheet, and impregnated into gauze.

•Function : rehydrating agents for dry wounds; little water absorption

•characteristics:
• Absorption level : Low
• Adhesive quality : Nonadhesive
• Will hydrate moderately

•Indications :
• dry or low exuding wounds
