Garhwal Himalayas
  Thisrange is also a part of Himalaya Sivalik Hills, the outer most hills of
the Himalaya located in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

 The cities which are included in these ranges are Pauri, Tehri, Uttarkashi,
Rudraprayag, Chamoli, and Chota Char Dham pilgrimage namely Gangotri,
Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath. Some of the beautiful sites of the
location are the hill stations of Mussoorie, Dhanaulti, Auli, Chakrata,
Chopta, UNESCO World Heritage site, Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers
National Parks is also located in Garhwal Himalaya.
Major peaks of Garhwal
Himalayas:
• Nanda Devi
• Kamet
• Sunanda Devi
• Abi Gamin
• Mana peak
• Mukut parbat
Glacier

 A glacier is a huge mass of ice that moves slowly over

land. The term “glacier” comes from the French word
glace (glah-SAY), which means ice. Glaciers are often
called “rivers of ice.”

 Glaciers fall into two groups: alpine glaciers and ice

sheets. Alpine glaciers form on mountainsides and move
downward through valleys
Glaciers of Garhwal Himalayas
• Uttarakhand cradled in the lap of Himalayas has a vivid
topography. From the arduous terrains, the lush green
meadows to the gigantic glaciers every little drop of
nature is a sight to behold. The mighty glaciers of
Uttarakhand serve as a vital source of providing fresh
water to the state. These pristine glaciers are also the
source of some of the important river bodies of India.
 Glaciers are the largest source of fresh water in the world.
Although the majority of the glaciers are found in polar
caps, the Great Himalayas have its fair share of glaciers
including the Uttarakhand Himalaya region. The majestic
glacial landscape not only leaves one spellbound but also
makes inches you closer to the enormous Himalayan
peaks.
 The snow-clad glaciers of “Dev Bhoomi” not only feed the perennial
rivers, but they are a popular tourist attraction. The adventure
enthusiasts hike on the summits of the glaciers of Uttarakhand
which offer a surreal view of the enchanting land. While some of
these glaciers are considered as holy and some are admired for this
magnificence.
Glaciers in Garhwal Region:

 Bander Punch Glacier

 Chorbari Bamak Glacier
 Dokriani Glacier
 Doonagiri Glacier
 Gangotri Glacier
 Khatling Glacier
 Nanda Devi group of Glacier
 Satopnath and Bhagirathi-Khark Glacier
 Tipra Bamak Glacier
Conclusion

 The melting fresh water from glaciers alters the ocean, not only by directly
contributing to the global sea level rise, but also because it pushes down the
heavier salt water, thereby changing what scientists call the THC, or Thermo
(heat) Haline (salt) Circulation, meaning currents in the ocean. This has an
immediate effect on the near region, such as the north Atlantic off the coast
of Greenland, but ultimately the impacts can ripple far beyond the
immediate area and climate.
 As the planet’s air conditioner, the polar ice caps impact
weather and climate dynamics, such as the jet stream.
Glaciers are also early indicators of climate changes that will
have a somewhat more delayed impact on other parts of the
Earth system. Glaciers are sentinels of climate change. They
are the most visible evidence of global warming today. In
addition to raising sea water levels, widespread loss of
glaciers will likely alter climate patterns in other, complex
ways. For example, glaciers’ white surfaces reflect the sun’s
rays, helping to keep our current climate mild.
