Great HImalayan Range

The Himalayan mountain range has three parts :

1.Great Himalaya or Himadri
2. Middle Himalaya or Himachal
3. Shiwalik Range

The Greater Himalayas

1. Highest peak in the world - Mt.Everest is a part of Greater Himalayas.
2. Some of the other significant peaks of this mountain range are Mt. Dhaulagiri
(8172 m.), Mt. Makalu (8481 m.),
and Mt. Kanchenjunga (8586 m.)
3. Several glaciers descend from this range, and they are perennially snowbound.
The Yamuna and the Ganga, Yangtze, Brahmaputra,Indus rivers originate from this
Himalaya

Middle Himalayas
The Middle Himalayas are famous for their valleys like Kangra, Kashmir, Kulu, etc
The most famous hill stations in the Middle Himalayas are Nainital, Darjeeling,
Ranikhet, Shimla, etc

Did You Know?

Because they can tolerate high altitudes, yaks are used as work animals in parts of
the Himalayas.
Mt.K2(Godwin Austin ) is India's highest peak and is the world's second highest
peak . This is located in Karakoram range
The Himalayas are the third largest deposit of ice and snow in the world, after
Antarctica and the Arctic. There are approximately 15,000 glaciers located
throughout the range. At 48 miles (72 km) in length,
the Himalayan Siachen glacier is the largest glacier outside the poles
The Himalayas are one of the youngest mountain ranges on the planet

In other words, they’re shrinking. This shrinking is largely attributed to climate

change. Not surprisingly, rising temperatures cause glaciers to melt at faster
rates. Unless snow accumulation increases at a similar rate, the glacier cannot
sustain itself. Scientists have reported temperature increases above the global
average at higher altitudes, where glaciers are often found.
The future is not looking bright for Himalayan glaciers.

Women move mountains is the theme of this year's International Mountain Day on 11
December.
International Mountain Day 2022 is an opportunity raise awareness about the need to
empower mountain women so they can participate more effectively in decision-making
processes and have more control over productive resources. By sharing excellence,
opportunities and capacity development in mountains, the Day can promote gender
equality and therefore contribute to improve social justice,
livelihoods and resilience.
