The Emerging

Generations of
Computers
Prayer
We thank you God for giving us
a beautiful day.
We are grateful for your love
and protection.
Help us to focus our hearts and minds
on what we are about to learn.
Inspire us to listen and be responsible digital
citizens.
Bless each and everyone of us as we
explore joyfully in our Computer class.
Amen.
Identify the names of

 Laptop

The computer has evolved from its simple and humble beginnings to
become one of the most important device that we use today. The
idea of a computer began when people started to think of an easier
way to calculate numbers. Today, you are lucky to use the computer
not only to calculate numbers but also to help you to do your
homework and play educational games.
five generations of
computers

 First Generation (1940-1956) – vacuum tubes

 Second Generation (1956-1963) – transistors
 Third Generation (1964-1971) – integrated circuits
 Fourth Generation (1971-2010) – microprocessors
 Fifth Generation (2010-present) – Artificial
Intelligence
First Generation (1940-1956)
It used vacuum tube as a major piece
of technology. It is an electronic tube
about the size of light bulb used as part
of the internal computer components. It
uses a great deal of electricity that
generates heat causing computer to
malfunction. The first commercial
computer who uses this vacuum
technology is UNIVAC (Universal
Automatic Computer). It used by the US
Bureau of Census in tabulating data.
Second Generation (1956-1963)

The second generation of computers saw the

use of transistors instead of vacuum tubes. A
transistor could replace the equivalent of 40
vacuum tubes allowing the computer to be
smaller, faster, reliable and energy efficient.
Another important development in this
generation is the use of symbolic languages
called assembly language. It allows computer
programmers to give instructions using
abbreviations instead of numbers making it less
burdensome for them. The first computer to use
transistors was the TX-0 (Transistorized
Experimental computer zero).
Third Generation (1964-1971)
It introduced the use of IC (integrated
circuits) in computers. IC is a complete
electronic circuit placed in a small chip
of silicon. Silicon is a semiconductor
substance that has the ability to control
the flow of electricity thus making the
computers increased its speed and
efficiency. Computers that uses
integrated circuits are smaller and
cheaper compare to the second
generation computers.
Fourth Generation (1971-2010)
It took advantage of the development
of microprocessors commonly known
as CPU. It’s development allows
computers to fit easily on a desk and
evolves up to the present hand-held
devices. Intel 4004 is the first general
purpose microprocessor that could
perform different functions in a wide
variety of devices. Its development
gave birth to the first commercially
successful personal computers MITS
Altair 8800.
Fifth Generation (2010-present)

The fifth generation of computers are still in development,

but some of these technologies are beginning to emerge
and be used such as Artificial Intelligence and robotics.

Artificial Intelligence is the ability of a computer machine
or computer programs to think, act and learn like human
beings. It has recently been a critical part of our everyday
lives. We use AI systems in interacting with our phones
through Siri and Alexa. There are self-driving cars like
Teslas that could interpret and analyze the surroundings.

Computer of the Future
1. Using MS Paint, Paint 3D, or
any Graphics Software, draw how
you see computers will look like
30 years from now. Give a
description of your computer.

2.Save your output with the

filename:
CNSurname5_1futurecomputer
and upload your output in our
Google Classwork
“What If…”
1. You may ask the class your “What
Ifs” about our lesson today.

2. Anyone in class may give their

answers and opinions.

“What if computers are not invented,

how can we survive in our generation?”
The internet provides tools for
everyone to communicate
online, and we must always
remember to communicate
effectively and responsibly.
