individual student.
2. The collections must be chosen with a purpose in
mind, not simply selected at random.
3. Work should be authentic.

achievement over a period of time.

PURPOSE OF PORTFOLIO

According to Gronlund, without clear understanding of

purpose, portfolios are likely to be indistinguishable from
unorganized collection of materials.
Some purposes of portfolios are,
 (1) Evaluating coursework quality, learning progress,
and academic achievement.
(2) Determining whether students have met learning
standards or other academic requirements for courses?
(3) Helping students reflect on their academic goals
and progress as learners.
CONTINUE…….

(4) Sometimes, an external source, such as state,

provincial, or district guidelines, may influence the
decision to include portfolios in the curriculum
(5) To use as a basis for assigning grades (based on
effort).
(6) To use as a basis for communication with
parents.
(7 Showcasing student work (only best work of the
students).
CONTINUE…….

(8) To keep parents engaged in their child’s

education and more informed about changes in
learning progress, curriculum, or testing.
(9) To structure and facilitate the self-reflection
process.
(10) To become part of a student’s formal transcript
and may be used in job and college admissions
applications.

How portfolios will be used?

Who will see the portfolios?
Types of work that are appropriate to include (e.g.,
drafts or only finished work? videos and tapes too?)
 Decide how much to include and how to organize it?
 Decide who selects the entries either students or
teacher or both?
 Role of collaboration in producing entries (e.g., only
independent work? assistance allowed?)

Minimum (and maybe maximum) number of entries

that a portfolio should have?
Forms of self-evaluation and self-reflection to be
included.
Timeline for entries.
Criteria for evaluating individual entries as well as
the overall portfolio.
Physical structure (e.g., binder? table of contents?)

Things / portfolio. …

GUIDELINES AND STUDENT’S ROLE IN SELECTION
OF PORTFOLIO ENTERIES AND SELF-EVALUATION

 Student’s involvement is important in portfolio

enteries but it does’nt means that student can
include anything they choose.
 Teachers need to give clear guidelines for selecting
pieces of work.
 Guidelines should depend upon purpose of portfolios
and the learning goals, that the teacher is trying to
achieve.
 Students role in selection of entries depends on
different aspects, like
CONTINUE…….

 Purpose of portfolios –
 For example if portfolio is showcasing the best work
of student – student has full freedom to select the
portfolio entries.
 On the other hand, In assessment portfolio – teacher
plays prominent role and students role is
subordinate in the selection.
WHAT IS THE STUDENT’S ROLE?

The students’ level of participation in the portfolio will be

largely responsible for the success of the portfolio. For this
reason, students must be actively involved in the choice of
entries and in the rationale for selecting those entries.

Selecting- The students’ first role is in selecting some of

the items to be part of the portfolio. Some teachers give
students a checklist for making choices. Others gave
student freedom in selecting their entries. At any rate
students should include their best and favorite pieces of
work along with those showing growth and process.

Reflecting and self-assessing- An essential

component of self assessment involves the students
in reflecting about their own work. At the beginning,
students might not know what to say so teachers will
need to model the kind of reflection expected from
students.
Another option is to provide some criteria for
individual pieces; students can judge their work
against the criteria. They can help develop the
criteria and list some of the qualities that the work is
supposed to illustrate.
