Rule 1

On 3 blank circles, draw in the diameter.

Now make 3 different triangles using the diameter AND

a point on the circumference.

Measure all the angles in your 3 triangles – what do you

notice?
Rule 1 : ANGLE IN A SEMICIRCLE = 90°

A triangle drawn from the

two ends of a diameter will
always make an angle of
90° where it hits the edge a = 50°
of the circle, no matter
where it hits.

Rule 2

Pick a point on the circumference of each circle and draw

a tangent and a radius from the same point. Measure
the 2 angles you have made. What do you notice?
Rule 2 : A TANGENT AND
RADIUS MEET AT 90°

A tangent is a line that just

touches the edge of a
curve. If a tangent and
radius meet at the same
point, then the angle they a = 30°
make is exactly 90°.

Draw a chord. Make 3 triangles above the chord,

using the chord and the circumference. Measure
the angles at the circumference. Now do the
same underneath the chord and measure the
angle at the circumference. What do you notice?
Do this 3 times with 3 different chord lengths.
Rule 4 : ANGLES IN THE SAME
SEGMENT ARE EQUAL

a
All triangles drawn from a
a
chord will have the same
angle where they touch the
circle. Also the two angles
on opposite sides of the
chord add up to 180°
