POETRY is a type of
literature in which
words and rhythm are
strung together to form
sounds, images, and
ideas that might be too
complex or abstract to
describe directly
FEATURES OF POETRY
 Has an overall central theme or idea.
 Has mental pictures created by a poet thru
language.
 Provokes thought and causes emotional
response
 Has elements.
STANZA
A part of poem with similar
rhythm and rhyme that will
usually repeat later in the
poem.

VERSE
A line of a poem, or a
group of lines within a
long poem.

A rhythm that
continuously repeats a
single basic pattern.

HAIKU
• Three line stanzas with a form
of 5-7-5 syllable count.
• Focuses on beauty and
simplicity in nature ang simple
moments of life.

FREE VERSE POEM
• Non-metrical, non-rhyming
lines that closely follow the
natural rhythms of speech
• Poet does not adhere to
metrical plan in composition

CINQUAINS
• Five-line poem by Adelaide
Crapsey(American poet)
• Inspired from Japanese haiku and
tanka
• Have vivid imagery meant to convey
a certain mood or emotion.

EPIC POEMS
• A long, narrative poem usually about
heroic deeds and events significant to
culture of the poet
• Inherent elements are superhuman
deeds, fabulous adventures, highly stylized
language, & blending of lyrical and
dramatic traditions

BALLAD POEMS
• A plot driven song, showing—rather than
telling
•Has one or more characters hurriedly unfurling
events leading to a dramatic conclusion.
• Often in quatrain stanzas, each line containing
as few as 3 or 4 stresses and rhyming either
the second and fourth lines, or all alternating
lines.

ACROSTIC POEMS
• A type of poetry where the first, last or
other letters in line spell out particularly
word or phrase.
• Most common and simple form of
acrostic is the first letters of each line
spell out the word or phrase.

SONNETS
• A 14-lines poem
• Has conventions on number of lines and
specific rhyme schemes and meter
• Originated in Italy in the 13th century,
derived from Italian word sonetto meaning
“little sound” or “little song.”

SYNTHESIS:
Poems have central theme/idea, have mental
pictures created by poets, used descriptive and
vivid language and have elements such as
stanza, verse, meter, rhyme, rhyming and
rhythm.
Common types poetry are haiku, free verse
poems, cinquains, epic poems, ballad poems,
acrostic poems and sonnets.
