How physical activity

helps with a better

quality of life for
women with type 2
diabetics

Omar ward
Background
● Why this topic?
○ Wanting to know if exercise helps with living
quality
○ How to help improve the living quality for type
2 diabetics
○ My mother is a type 2 diabetic so I’m intrigued
to learn to help her out and be healthy
● Exercise recommendations for type 2 diabetics
○ “If you stay fit and active throughout your
life, you’ll be able to better control your
diabetes and keep your blood glucose level
in the correct range. Controlling your blood
glucose level is essential to preventing
long-term complications, such as nerve pain
and kidney disease.” (Lisa M. Leontis RN, ANP-C)
Background Cont.
● It was found in studies that some of
these risk factors were eliminated s
from exercise (Harvard Medical
School)
○ People with diabetes who
walked at least two hours a
week were less likely to die of
heart disease than their
sedentary counterparts
○ Those who exercised three to
four hours a week cut their
risk even more.
○ Women with diabetes who
spent at least four hours a
week doing moderate
exercise (including walking)
or vigorous exercise had a
40% lower risk of developing
heart disease than those who
didn't exercise.
Purpose

● How much exercise helps lower blood pressure, lower harmful LDL cholesterol and
triglycerides, reduces anxiety, stress and with weight control
● Trying to find the baseline amount of exercise for the wellbeing of an individual with type
2 diabetes
Hypotheses
Null Hypothesis

● A month of Exercise will have no effect on better quality of life for type 2 diabetics

Research Hypothesis

● Exercise increases the quality of life for an individual with type 2 diabetes after a month
of exercise
Methods
● Pre-Experiment Survey
○ Inquires
■ Amount of exercise in a week
■ Type of exercise
■ Scale their self-esteem and stress they’re feeling
● Experiment
○ Going to have 2 groups of women with type 2 diabetes
○ Between the ages of 40-50 years old
○ 10 participants selected randomly
○ Group 1 is going to walk 5 times a week for 2 hours a day for a month
○ Group 2 will live a sedentary lifestyle and will not exercise for those 5 days
○ Before they walk they will rate their self esteem, stress levels and how they are feeling physically
on a google survey from scaled 1-10
○ After their walking they will again rate their self esteem, stress levels and how they are feeling
physically on a google survey from scaled 1-10
Methods

● The workout will include walking for 2 hours a day

○ One hour at 10AM
○ One Hour at 5PM
○ The sedentary group will be given their scale reading at the same times
● Variables
○ Independent Variable:
■ Wellbeing and stress levels from the exercise on the individuals with type 2 diabetes
■ Wellbeing and stress levels of the Sedentary lifestyle group
○ Dependent Variable
■ Individuals with type 2 diabetes
Statistics

1. Central Tendency Statistics

a. Mean
b. Median
c. Mode
● This will be easy to separate
● Rate how they’re wellbeing before and after a workout on a 1-10 scale
● Rate their stress before and after a workout on a scale
● After they rate the scales of how they’re feeling you can make your graphs

Conclusion

● The participants who had a sedentary lifestyle were more stressed than those who were
exercising
● The participants who exercised showed to have a higher ranking on the quality of life
scale
● Every person in the is different even with diabetes so their reaction to working out could
differ
● We could rerun the experiment but have the two groups switch from exercising to
sedentary lifestyles
● Also redoing the experiment would show how consistent the hypothesis is
● Of course there are going to be your outliers as every experiment has
Limitations

● Making someone exercise is hard to do, you can’t force someone to do it if they aren’t
able to put in one hundred percent effort
● People who were supposed to be sedentary could have exercised
● Forgot to check if one of the participants is a smoker or other tobacco or drug use
● Only had 20 participants could need more individuals
● People who were supposed to exercise could have lied about how long they walked
● It’s a month long if the weather doesn’t cooperate they may not be able to walk on a
given day
