Carbon Dioxide

 Carbon dioxide is a chemical compound

composed of one carbon and two oxygen
atoms.
 It is often referred to by its formula CO2.
 It is present in the Earth's atmosphere at a
low concentration and acts as a greenhouse
gas.
 In its solid state, it is called dry ice.
 It is a major component of the carbon cycle.
Preparation of Carbon Dioxide
Whenever an acid reacts with a
carbonate,carbon dioxide is realised with
effervescence. We can observe this
phenomenon by adding a drop of lemon juice,
vinegar or bathroom acid to a piece of waste
marble or some baking soda (NaHCO3).
This makes carbon dioxide easy to make in the
laboratory. Calcium carbonate and hydrochloric
acid are usually used because they are cheap
and easy to obtain.
calcium carbonate + hydrochloric acid →
calcium chloride + water + carbon dioxide
CaCO3(s) + 2HCl(aq) → CaCl2(aq) + CO2(g) +
H2O(l)
Properties of Carbon Dioxide

gas.
It is only 1.5 times as heavy as air.

Properties of Carbon Dioxide

Chemical Properties:
 Carbon Dioxide does not burn. It is not a
supporter of combustion. So, a burning
gas splinter can also be extinguished by
this gas.
 A solution of carbon dioxide in water is
acidic due to the formation of carbonic
acid. So, the gas turns moist blue litmus
paper wine-red.
 Carbon dioxide turns limewater milky
due to the formation of the white,
insoluble calcium carbonate.
Uses of Carbon Dioxide
 Biochemical reactions – Carbon dioxide plays an
important part in vital plant and animal process,
such as photosynthesis and respiration. Green
plants convert carbon dioxide and water into food
compounds, such as glucose, and oxygen.
 Helps sustain life – It traps part of the radiation of
the sun, reflected by the earth, in the atmosphere.
This keeps the earth warm enough to sustain life.
 Helps maintain acid-base balance of the blood – It
dissolves in blood — to form carbonic acid
(H2CO3). This helps maintain the acid-base
balance of the blood.
 Used for manufacturing urea – It is used in large
amounts in the manufacture of urea, which is a
important fertiliser.
Uses of Carbon Dioxide

 Used for making beverages – Carbon dioxide is

used in the preparation of carbonated drinks such A carbonated drink
as soda.
 Refrigerator – Liquid and solid carbon dioxide
are especially important refrigerants, especially
in the food industry, where they are employed
during the transportation of ice-cream and other
frozen goods.
 Fire Extinguishers – Carbon dioxide extinguishes
flames, and some fire extinguishers, especially
those designed for electrical fires, contain liquid
carbon dioxide under pressure.
 Atmospheric Props – Dry ice is frozen carbon
dioxide. It produces a ground fog effect when
dropped into hot water, or hot water is poured on
it as it sublimes instead of turning into a liquid.
