The Mole Concept
PROCEDURE
1. Weigh an empty paper cup. Record the mass.
2. Crumple a piece of aluminum foil and place it inside
the empty paper cup. Weigh the paper cup with the
aluminum foil and record the mass.
3. Determine the mass of the aluminum foil by
subtracting the mass of the empty paper cup from the
mass of the paper cup with aluminum foil.
4. Calculate the number of atoms of aluminum present
inside the paper cup.
5. Record your results in the table provided in the lab
sheet.

Sample

Aluminum Table Salt Table Sugar

Mass of sample + paper cup (g)

Mass of empty paper cup (g)

Mass of sample (g)

Atomic or Molar Mass of Sample (g/mol)

Number of moles in sample

Number of particles in sample (atoms or molecules)

Number of atoms in one gram of sample
6. Repeat steps 1 to 5, this time calculating the
number of molecules of table salt and table sugar.
(Use a plastic spoon to transfer the sample into
the empty paper cup). Do not put back excess
sample into its container.
