MOVEMENT

JOINTS
z z

FLEXION

bending a joint. This

occurs when the angle
of a joint decreases. For
example, the elbow
flexes when performing
a biceps curl.
z z

XTENSION

straightening a
joint. This occurs
when the angle of
a joint increases,
for example, at the
elbow hen putting
a shot.
z z

Abduction

movement away from

the midline of the body.
This occurs at the hip
and shoulder joints
during a jumping jack
movement
z z

Adduction
Opposite of abduction.
Movement of a limb
toward the body midline.
An example is raising
the arm sideward then
lowering the arm to the
side of the body.
z z

Rotation
this is where the limb
moves in a circular
movement around a
fixed joint towards or
away from the midline
of the body. This occurs
in the hip in golf while
performing a drive shot
z z

Circumduction

Is a combination of
flexion, extension,
adduction and
abduction commonly
occur in ball socket
joints such as shoulder.
z z

PRONATION

Moving of palm from an

anterior or upward facing
position to posterior or
downward facing
position. An example is
prone lying position.
z z

Supination

Opposite of pronation.
Moving the palm from
a posterior position to
an anterior position. An
example is supine lying.
z z

Inversion

Special movement of
the foot. It’s the turning
of the sole of the foot
facing medially.
z z

Eversion

Opposite of Inversion.
It’s the turning of the
sole of the foot laterally.
z z

Plantar flexion

Movement only
occurs at the ankle.
An example is
pointing the toes in
ballet.
z z

Dorsiflexion

Straightens the
ankle, causing the
toes to point
downward and
standing on your
toes.
