WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES
BETWEEN GUIDANCE AND
COUNSELLING?
• Both guidance and counselling will help the client improve his/her
behavior

• Both involve some form of information sharing

• Both processes aim at the same goal – to help the client solve a
problem or make a decision

GUIDANCE
• Guidance helps an individual make the best choices

• Guidance gives clients ready answers

• Guidance uses an external approach to tackle the issue at hand

• Guidance is provided by an expert in the field at hand or anybody superior


COUNSELLING
• Counseling helps individual change their perspective

• Counseling helps clients come up with their well-informed solutions

• Counseling uses an in-depth approach to establish the root causes of the problem
before tackling it

• Counseling is given by people who have been trained professionally to handle


psychological problems
WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES
BETWEEN COUNSELLING AND
PSYCHOTHERAPY?
• Both provide the person with a confidential space in which to explore
personal difficulties

• The effective practice also depends to a greater extent on the quality of the
client-counsellor/psychotherapist relationship

• Self-awareness is valued elements of training and ongoing development in


both counselling and psychotherapy
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES
BETWEEN COUNSELLING AND
PSYCHOTHERAPY ?
COUNSELLING
• Developmental –fosters coping skills to facilitate development and present
problems

• The focus is on short-term goals (resolution of immediate concerns)

• The treatment programme can include preventative approaches and various


counselling strategies to assist with the client’s concerns

• Counselling services can be provided in a variety of settings such as schools,


churches, and mental health clinics
PSYCHOTHERAPY
• Remediative –aims at helping clients overcome existing problems, such as anxiety
and depression

• The focus is on both short- and long-term goals. Long-term goals can involve
processes such as helping the client overcome a particular mental disorder

• Psychotherapeutic approaches are complex. They utilize strategies that relate to


conscious and unconscious processes

• Psychotherapy is typically offered in settings such as private practice, mental


health centres, and hospitals
