WHAT ARE THE ADVANCES OF FULL INCLUSION

▹ Preparing System
The current directions of school reform for the 21st
century emphasize not only for improvement in general
education but also to improve performance for
educational reorganization to merge the goals of regular
and special education to work toward a “shared
educational agenda” (Sailor 1991)

Preparing Teachers

Stainback&Stainback (1990) pointed out although


regular educators cannot educate students with
disabilities alone, neither can special educators. Teachers
in the past saw students who were not successful in the
mainstream as needing special 3
education programs.
Preparing Families

Family play a critical role in creating an


inclusive school philosophy. They need to be
included in all decisions that affect the
instructional program of their children.
Families are being asked to think differently
about what is the best for their children
▹ Preparing Students

The inclusion process needs to be explained to students before it is put into
practice. Student should be asked to make suggestions. When students believed
that their input is valued, they are more likely to feel vested and support the
program. All students should have the opportunity to discuss their questions,
fears, and concerns. They need to know how, when and why to aid students
with disabilities.

ALTERNATIVE POSSIBILITIES

Social Promotion
▹ Negative Effects of Social Promotion
Educational leaders, government officials and policy makers
are clearly concerned about the prevalence of social promotion.
It is problematic for students, teacher and parents. Social
promotion gives some students the false sense that they have
most skills necessary for later success

Conclusion about Social Promotion

. Social promotion is a widespread practice that is being


questioned by school personnel and the community at
large. Districts are implementing policies to eliminate or
severely curtail the practice because of the negative short
and long term effects

Grade Retention

▹ Prevalence and Cost of Grade Retention


The prevalence of grade retention, much like
social promotion,is unknown, since school
district rarely keep records of how many
children are retained each year.

Retention of Academic Achievement

Retention can help some students and in certain


circumstances, but there are serious risks associated with
it. (Thompson, 1999). The majority of students show that
retention is not effective in promoting positive academic
achievement especially in the long run.

Retention and Social Health
Implications

Children who are retained tend to fee


more poorly about their capalities,
score lower on measures of personal
and psychological adjustment, and
display more discipline problems.
Clinical interviews with students
showed that they felt angry or sad
about retention and feared the
reaction of family and friends

Conclusion about Retention
Even though a few studies have found that retention
can have a positive start term benefit, that vast majority
have shown either no long term advantage, harm or
consistent “wash out”. This indicates that the potential
benefit does not warrant the risk. Even researchers who
otherwise support retention do not view it as a tool for
helping children succeed in school.

Alternative to Social Promotion and Grade Retention

As schools create plans to prevent school failure, two


key points should be emphasized. Schools must

1. be proactive and attempt to prevent failure, and


2. identify at risk children as soon as possible and
immediately take action to implement best practices.
