getting out from under the car.

12
Place Wheel
Chocks
Place a wheel chock, a block of wood,
or other solid object in front of and
behind the wheel that is diagonal from
your lift point.

13
Position The Jack
Consult your owner’s manual for the
proper place to raise your vehicle.

14
Position The Jack
If you are using your car’s jack, check
for special notches or locators on the
jack and car body.

15
RAISE THE
VEHICLE
Use the jack wrench to turn the jack
and slowly raise the vehicle.

16
PLACE A
SAFETY STAND
Once you have the vehicle at a good
height, place a safety stand under the
car.

Alternative
Car ramps are an alternative method
for raising your vehicle.

How to Change a
Tire
What you need
◂ Spare tire
◂ Wheel chock (optional)
◂ Jack and jack wrench

21
What you need
◂ Lug wrench
◂ Tools to remove coverings or locking lug nuts

22
SECURE THE AREA
Try to have the vehicle parked on a level surface.

23
LOCATE YOUR
SPARE TIRE
AND TOOLS
The spare tire may be stored in the
trunk, under the back of the car, or on
the outside.

24
SET THE
PARKING BRAKE
Even if one of the back tires is flat,
setting the parking brake will hold the
other one.

25
CHOCK A WHEEL
If you don’t have anything available,
you can still work without it

26
REMOVE
ORNAMENTS
If your car has hubcaps or other
ornaments covering the lug nuts,
remove these items.

27
RAISE THE
VEHICLE

28
REMOVE THE FLAT TIRE
Once the vehicle is raised, remove the lug nuts and
remove the flat tire by pulling it away from the vehicle.

29
INSTALL THE SPARE TIRE
Install the spare tire, paying attention to how it mounts to
the car.

30
USING A SPARE TIRE

A temporary spare is intended only to get you to a place

where you can get your tire repaired or replaced.

31
LOWER THE VEHICLE
Make sure there are no tools or other items under the
vehicle and slowly lower the car down to the ground.

32
TIGHTEN THE LUG NUTS

When you tighten the lug nuts, use an alternating pattern

to tighten them evenly.

33
SECURE LOOSE PARTS
Stow the flat tire, ornaments, and hubcaps until the tire
can be repaired or replaced.

34
4.
How to Jump-Start
a Battery
What you need
◂ Jumper cables or a power pack
◂ Spare battery or running vehicle
◂ Battery terminal brush (optional)

36
37
JUMP-STARTING WITH A
BOOSTER BATTERY
The most common way of jump-starting a battery is by
connecting it to the battery of another vehicle using
jumper cables.

38
LOCATE THE
BATTERIES
They are usually mounted under the
hood.

39
PARK THE BOOSTER
VEHICLE
Park the booster vehicle next to the disabled vehicle so
that the batteries are as close as possible.

40
REMOTE BATTERY
LOCATION
Some batteries are located in a spot that is difficult to
access, such as the spare tire area of the trunk.

41
IDENTIFYING
CABLE ENDS AND
TERMINAL POSTS
Red is used for positive voltage and
black is used for the grounding cable.

42
TURN OFF ALL ELECTRONIC
DEVICES IN BOTH CARS
Power surges can occur during jump-starting, ruining
electronic components.

43
TURN ON THE HEATER FANS
The heater fan uses a lot of power, and if you do have a
surge, it will be able to absorb the power spike.

44
CLEAN THE
TERMINALS ON
BOTH BATTERIES
Excess corrosion will prevent the
jumper cables from making good
contact with the terminals.

45
HOOK UP THE
POSITIVE (RED)
CABLE
Pull the terminal covers out of the
way and hook one red clamp to the
positive post of the disabled battery

46
HOOK UP THE
GROUND (BLACK)
CABLE TO THE
BOOSTER BATTERY
Pull any terminal caps back and place
a black clamp on the negative post of
the booster battery

47
ATTACH THE GROUND
(BLACK) CLAMP TO
THE DISABLED
VEHICLE
The opposite end of the black cable
needs to be grounded.

48
START THE BOOSTER
VEHICLE
Start the booster vehicle and run it at a moderate idle
speed.

49
START THE BOOSTER
VEHICLE
Allow the booster car to charge the disabled battery for a
couple of minutes before trying to start the disabled
vehicle.

50
CAUTION
Stand back if you are outside a vehicle while it is being
jump-started.

51
START THE DISABLED
VEHICLE
With the booster vehicle still running, try to start the
disabled vehicle.

52
REMOVE THE
BOOSTER CABLES
Take the booster cables off in the reverse order of putting
them on.

53
SPECIALTY
BATTERIES
Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries are great, but if
the charge falls under 10.5 volts, they can’t be recharged
by basic battery chargers.

54
CHARGING WITH A
PORTABLE CHARGER
Charging with a portable charging
device is very similar to using a
booster battery.

55
5.
How to Check and
Change a Fuse
What you need
◂ Circuit tester or multimeter
◂ Spare fuses (the type used in your car)
◂ Fuse puller or long-nose pliers
◂ Owner’s manual

57
LOCATE THE FUSE
BOX AND REMOVE
COVER
The location of the fuse box varies
greatly, but they can usually be found
in the engine compartment or in the
dashboard.

58
TEST THE FUSES
Place the metal contact or tips of your
tester to the exposed metal parts of the
fuse.

59
TEST THE FUSES
If you are using a meter, turn the
meter setting to “continuity” or
“resistance,” usually marked with an
omega symbol (1).

60
TEST THE FUSES
If the fuse is good, the meter will show
almost no resistance or zero
resistance, and if the fuse is bad, it will
not make a connection in your meter

61
TEST THE FUSES
Check all of the fuses for continuity
and note any that are bad.

62
PULL THE FUSE
Using either your fuse puller (ours
was built into the tester) or a pair of
pliers, gently pull the fuse from its
pocket.

63
INSPECT THE FUSE
If the fuse is blown, the metal in
between the two power posts will be
melted and will not be connected.

64
INSTALL THE NEW
FUSE
Using a fuse of the same size and color
(the color is specific to how much
power the fuse can protect), press the
new fuse into the socket.

65
INSTALL THE NEW
FUSE
Push it all the way in to make good
contact.

66
CHECK THE NEW FUSE
Re-check the new fuse to make sure it is good, and then
try the electronics that were failing to see if that solved
the problem.

67
FUSE TESTERS
You can use an expensive multimeter or a simple circuit
tester that may be included in your box of fuses.
