Introduction to Environmental Science
Lab

Lecture 1
Basic understanding on environment
and scientific method
What is environment?
Environment means anything that surround us. It can be living (biotic) or non-living
(abiotic) things.

Figure: Components of Environment

3
Types of Environment
• Natural environment: encompasses all living and non-living things
occurring naturally on earth
– Includes all
Biotic factors i.e. plants, animals, microorganisms; and
Abiotic factors i.e. minerals, rocks, water bodies, and atmospheric
layers

• Built environment: part of the physical environment which is built

by humans through science, technology, culture etc.
– Includes places and spaces created or modified by people i.e.
buildings, parks, transportation systems etc.

Basic laboratory rules and safety

6
List of Do's and Don'ts in the Laboratory
• Students are not permitted to enter into the lab without the
permission of laboratory supervisor or course instructor.
• Considering of the COVID-19 pandemic, students are not
allowed to enter the laboratory without wearing a mask and
students are encouraged to wear head cover and hand gloves in
the lab.
• Laboratory should be in clean condition after using it. No waste
is to be left in the sinks. Waste (i.e. chemical, biological or items
such as broken glass, hand gloves) should be place in the
marked bins in the laboratory.
• Defective equipment or broken glassware must be reported to
the instructor.

7
List of Do's and Don'ts in the Laboratory......
• Drinking and eating is not allowed inside the lab.
• Wash hands properly before leaving the laboratory.
• Personal belongings (i.e. Bags) should be placed in designated
areas.
• Report any kind of injuries to the instructor.

8 8
Lab Safety Symbols
They alert about the possible dangers in the laboratory.

9
Basic calculation methods and data representation
Each dataset (primary and secondary) is required to be analysed and
presented possibly by creating graphs. In case of larger datasets, the
most common method of analysis is calculating average, or taking the
arithmetic mean of the data set.

Average calculation
• If there are six apples in a basket and their weights are 120 gm, 115
gm, 125 gm, 118 gm, 121 gm and 123 gm: the average weight or
arithmetic mean is …………...?

Calculation: ?

10
Percentage calculation
• Percentage: Another way for mathematical analysis is the calculation
of a percentage. For example, if you have 25 colour pencils and 5 of
them are yellow in colour, you could state that 20 percent (20%) of
the pencils are yellow.

• For instance, there can be six different fruits in a basket, but you’ll
have to measure what percent of them are bananas? To calculate it,
you’ll have to know the total number of fruits in the basket and
number of bananas in there, then calculate the percent:

Assignment/Lab report 1
(Prepare Lab report-1 from here)

Three lakes of Dhaka had different fish

species in December 2020 as given in
Table 1. Fill out the ‘?’ in Table 1.1 in
order to calculate the following:
a) Total number of individual of each
species?
b) Average number of individual in the
three lakes? Make a bar chart of these
in MS excel.
c) Total number of individuals of all
species?

12
Procedure:

1. Fill up the missing data (?) in the Table 1.1 and Table 1.2
2. Read over the questions and try to find out the answers for all
the questions for this lab.
3. Submit your report after you are done.

13
Calculate total and average.
Make a bar chart of the average number of each species.

Table 1.1: Number of different fish species in three lakes of Dhaka city
Species Gulshan lake Dhanmondi lake Diabari lake Total ? Average ?
(also, make a
bar chart)

No. of Tilapia 132 225 541 ? ?

No. of Catla 32 258 333 ? ?

No. of Rui 111 232 154 ? ?

No. of Mrigal 321 25 54 ? ?

Total ? ? ?

14
Calculate percentage of each species in each lake?
Make a bar chart of these in MS excel.

Table 1.2: Percentage of different species of fish in each lake

% of Tilapia ? ? ?

% of Catla ? ? ?

% of Rui ? ? ?

% of Mrigal ? ? ?

Questions
Q1. Fill up the missing data (?) in the table 1.1.

Q2. Fill up the missing data (?) in the table 1.2.

Q3. Make a bar chart of the average number of each species. Be sure to label your graph
properly in Microsoft Excel.

Q4. Make a bar chart of the percentages of each species in each lake. Be sure to label your
graph properly in Microsoft Excel.

Q5. If there are 6,045 fishes altogether in the three lakes, how many fishes would you
predict to be Tilapia based on your sample?

Q6. If the total number of four fish species contained in 1,000 litres of water from Hakaluki
Haor and the volume of Hakaloki Haor is 125,000,000 cubic meters, how many Catla fishes
would you expect to find in the whole Haor based on your sampling? Be sure to include your
calculations in your answer.
